"I was about the only one who went further up the valley a couple of years ago, but it avoids the crags and the congestion that goes with them and I recon I gained 100m or so, and quite a few places doing this."

So you followed the beck beyond the reservoir, towards the head of the valley, and then swung right to climb and meet the ridge above the rock steps? How's the path beyond the res? I walked part way a couple of years ago and seemed to be getting more rocky and less runnable.

Once you get beyond the little waterfall 100 yards or so past the reservoir it stops being mildly rocky and becomes what route descriptions usually call "runnable" (but not by me!). You might end up running slightly further because the usual route bears SW after the rock step, but it's nothing like as steep. I had a look at the weekend and couldn't decide whether it would be quicker or not (certainly would be in descent I reckon).

It's not going to stop me being near the back whatever I do!

I know that feeling! It'd take a brave man to head straight up the valley as the masses turn right up the 'usual' route!

Imagine the shame if it all went wrong!
