Hosepipe in back gargen and a washing up type scrubbing brush gets the worse off for me.

Another +1 for the wet socks...

Bring my legs up a treat ready for application of scented lotion.....

It pains me to admit it but I rub Avon "Skin So Soft" lotion on my legs to fend off the midgies and clegs and other stuff that bites, this seems to aid mud removal after a run too. I feel so ashamed

You should do! Mind you, I normally take a travel-style towel, which is super-absorbent and helps preserve ones modesty too if you are changing in a public car park and it's really cold...

The Bolton-by-Bowland race - arguably the muddiest in the calendar - provides an alternative solution at the end (pictures by Wharfeego):

I'm kind of relieved that other people use their soggy socks...after posting I thought I might get shunned at races but this is a bunch of fellrunners, I should have known I was in good and grubby company!

It's Lancashire slang for a Yorkshireman.

and also a member of the Horsefly family of insects, usually found on one or both of my legs !

I forgot to take the SSS to work a few weeks ago and that evening I got bitten by one, my ankle was swollen to the size of my calf, took a course of antibiotics to fettle it. I had to have a fortnight off running too which has been a right pain.
