Modding Xtalons with shoe glue

Anyone done this? Someone (Jonathan now running with Mossley Hill?) had a pair suitably modded at Cader Idris. Any particular shoe-glue to be recommended? Is there a thread already?

(Reason: Obviously the 212s are horrible clumpy and heavy shoes that don't let you run properly, but the red 190s develop holes in the upper near the front as soon as you take them out of the box).

How big are the holes? Is it possible to stitch them? If you can use dental floss as it's mega strong. Otherwise with shoe goo you have to temporarily line the inside of the shoe where the hole is (try duck tape) then apply a super thin film of the stuff on the outside - do not be tempted to put loads on. When its dry you can take off the duck tape. I have found that the goo can do more harm than good, causing blisters so go careful on it! As for recommending a product - I've only tried "shoe goo" so that's the limit of my experience, but I've heard of something called "barge cement" that cobblers are supposed to use...

not used it on Xtalons, but this stuff is pretty good for fabric repairs. You can probably find similar in your local farm supplies

I've put shoe goo on the part of exposed mesh between the rubbery bit around the toes and the plastic bits on the side. It does stiffen them up a little (i'd thought I'd ruined them at first) but it has stopped them blowing out and I've had no problems running in them.

Will try this http://www.amazon.co.uk/McNett-Black.../dp/B000SCJQYQ on my next pair as it makes a flexible rubbery layer which hopefully won't crack - see back shoe.

I've tried using Shoe Goo to fix several pairs of offroad shoes (I pinched it off my son, he used it to repair his skateboarding shoes) and it works up to a point. Like Twister says, you have to be careful where you put it as it dries quite hard - I tried fixing a split in the uppers of a pair of Roclite 295s and the resulting lump just caused a big blister. On the other hand, I have repaired the heel area on a number of pairs of mudclaws, the fabric wears down and holes appear when you get the heel caught on rocks, crevices etc and it does a really good job in this respect. Just don't put it anywhere where flex is required. I suppose you could use it to reinforce such areas on shoes from new.

Thanks, this is what I meant ~ modding them straight out of the box because it's that fabric area that disintegrates so quickly. The biggest problem with the 212s is all the extra stuff under the heel. But the flexibility of the 190s is nice.. Let's see if I can have it both ways!
