I can't believe it's all about reserve lists EIGHT MONTHS before the event!

Looks to me like there's room on the calendar for a second Ben Nevis race. The second one could go up and back over Melantee, thus making it a much better race as well....

No, I'm not volunteering to organise it!!

I must be a lot further down the list than you Ady.
I was told not much chance of a run but keep training.

True, it was set up originally as an alternative to the Ben in (I think) the 80s because the Ben had an extortionate entry fee (double that of the next most expensive on the calendar) and people were getting cheesed off with that and the fact that it used to fill up by June (!!!).

Originally, the Grisedale was quoted at the same figures as the Ben (10/4400) but they have since realised it has even more climbing than that!

Apart from it being the highest hill in the country and thus kind of sacred, I'd have to say the Ben is second best to Grisedale as a race..

I'll second that.............but don't forget The Ben is hard to train for due to the terrain / long single climb / descent. Does that make it a harder race ??

I'm with you on that route Trundler - indeed I was saying as much at training the other day. Would make a classic route and save me from dying a death on the road at the end. I much prefer to die my death on the fell

Great idea. This race would be about the same length as the classic Ben, and cut out two miles of road and about three miles of horrific paved footpath. It would spare the feelings of hundreds of hill walkers on the path who just happened to have chosen that day for their ascent of Ben Nevis. The total ascent would be roughly 1000' more, would include all the best bits of the descent from Ben Nevis itself, and would include the slopes of Melantee, with which I am not familiar, but I expect they are lovely.

I suspect the Ben is held when it is partly because that is the narrow time slot when snow, old or new, is least likely.

It's a long time since this thread was at the top. I hope the training is going well for everyone.
