Regardless of your own ability, experience - or ambition/pride! - the organisers ask all pairs to remain together, retire together if retirement is needed, and report to the finish as a pair. It's not too much to ask...
Assuming he's telling the truth, it's different from 2009 in that they were open and honest with the marshalls, and he was explicitly running the rest of the route unofficially, outside the race. Whereas in 2009 there was clear intent to deceive.
