No CL my motto is "love thy neighbour as thyself" which means the same. That's why Rodders is so uncomfortable and inarticulate about the plight of Trimm's mate. Something inside him, pity, sympathy, conscience, whatever you might want to call it makes him want to help and he doesn't like it because it's a feeling you can't shake off; like chains. We humans are bound to each other, "No man is an island entire unto himself.." (Think that's right)
Sometimes there's a Tsunami, drought, civil war, old people dying of hypothermia, child abuse etc etc story on the news and I think, "Not again!" and I can't stand it that I should feel responsible and I turn it off and say I pay into Oxfam already or I pay a fortune in taxes. But the feeling won't go away. So we have to do something and it's never enough. It's a bloody nuisance but that's just the way we are.

Actually my motto is: "I am not number! I am a free man!" Patrick McGoohan circa 1967.
Love thy neighbour as thyself is a great motto GD, works for me, but sometimes thy neighbour hates for no reason at all, as history has proved. There will always be trouble in the world. Unless all human beings are tolerant and understanding of each other.

Merrylegs I don't think tolerance is a virtue.Particularly where evil is concerned.I know the point you're making though.

What? Even if he murdered your family?
I agree, it is happening legally, as i said before do-gooders making things worse at the expense of good people. I will continue to love my neighbour, but if he murdered my family, and if i was allowed to get near him, i'd do time. Its a crazy world, but i've got to be myself

Well put it this way, i will be tolerant of people unless they are evil and then i'll land one on their nose. Thinking about it, i've always been like that and its landed me in the s@@t sometimes, i blame me dad for teaching me to stick up for meself

Very thought provoking all this, one last thought from me. Good people, stay good and don't fall out discussing this, bad people, watch out, you'll get yours. And if anyone murders my family, there is no measure of how hard and fast i will bring this fight to your doorstep. The Bourne Identity, oops i should be on the fave quotes thread. Cool Runnings everyone, oops did it again, fave films

Rodders they always give life boat scenarios, to justify the wholesale looting in the welfare state.

We're both using the same debating technique then. Trying to present an uncomfortable scenario to put each other on the spot. Alright I probably wouldn't love a person who murdered my family. I would probably want to do the same as you: hunt him down with a Bowie knife or something. More realistically though, and getting back to how this debate started, my taxes would hopefully contribute to his being caught by the police and being kept in prison for a very long time by the prison service.
The vikings on Iceland 1000 years ago used to sort things out mano y mano (think that's right ) in a free, pioneering landscape; if you read the sagas it's surprising how much they sound like reports from Bosnia. They had no king, nobody to tell them what to do. But they got sick of it and formed a parliament in pre christian times. People can't live the way you espouse for long. Either they organise themselves with laws and taxes and so forth or some big guy comes along and rips them off or they waste their lives ripping each other off.

There ain't no easy answer to the question of how do people live together in peace and harmony If there is an answer at all.

Course there is an answer, but it ain't easy. It needs good people to act and to act continously. It needs selflessness and compassion, determination and thoroughness, strength and humility. A very difficult call indeed and beyond the ken of the feckless and the self-serving (attributes shared by the scroungers and the fat cats at either end of social spectrum).

Sorry Wheeze, in a pessimistic mood earlier. That is a good hard answer. More of these people required in posistions of power. Back to my optimistic self now, Cheers
