Daz, a better description of fecklessness would be hard to find. What's worrying is the media would have us believe that this is the norm in society now. And, indeed, the stats are frightening. In some parts of the country, kids are part of the 3rd generation that has never worked. Imagine trying to motivate a kid to work when they know...know mindyou...that their Dad and their Grandad managed perfectly well on handouts from the state. Handouts you, me, our parents and our grandparents have made available.

My better half works in FE. Recently had to cope with irate parents of an excluded kid. They were irate not because he got excluded but because they (not the kid) had not received the handout for helping his placement. Peoples values are so up the ying-yang thats its no surprise to find the self serving mantra of CL and those authors holding sway.

You're p*ssed off, I'm p*ssed off. So is GD. What to do? Umm, swallow yer pride and vote Tory!! (if we'd a done it a few years ago, at least we would have had a Yorkshireman for PM!).

Molly is very flattered and has torn around the garden, arse tucked in, ears back, twice in your honour! (why do labs do that?? )

Actually Also if you look you'll see that I've made strenuous efforts to make relevant fell type references eg the scenario on the side of Green Gable (that's where I picture it for some reason) where Chris (?) and I are scrambling over the bloodsoaked rocks to get to injured runners and trampling our wives in the process!

As a rule, selfishness is reprehensible. Altruism is something humanists aspire to. Without altruism we become selfish savages.
It's their concept of the greater good that frightens me Wheeze!

Words are all we've got on here wheeze.Tough, they don't mean what you'd like, including selfishness and Altruism.

It's the other way round:without selfishness we become altruistic savages.History and Stalin tell the tale.

Well said wheeze! It seems that many would like to join in and ask us questions, but don't quite understand whats being discussed, or are afraid to express their views.

This is the best thread I've ever been on!

GD you forgot Buddhism. It is much more a philosophy than a religion and very much relevant to the current debate. Life is suffering; suffering is caused by desire; desire can be overcome. Christopher Leigh is buggering about with semantics; I know his basic argument is wrong because there are only three 'mortal' sins in Buddhism and they are anger, ignorance and greed; and selfishness, whichever way he wants to dress it up, is a form of greed.

The concept of greater good is core to much of what the profession has to do and it is debated at the highest levels of academia and law. The concept of trust comes in here doesn't it?

Sorry, but the phrase altruistic savage is an oxymoron.

[QUOTE=daz h;104719]err we are having a good debate here
lots of talk about selfishness in our society which i personally think has been created by the way in which this country has been allowed to spiral. The scroungers are simply being paid to sit on there arses having a nice steady life which annoys us members in society that have grafted for what we have.

Daz the opposite is true. There are hardly any selfish people left in britain.I mean people who actually know where their interests lie.People are so used to hearing the bromide 'ohhhh don't be so selfish' that they give up any personal desire or goal. They are made to feel guilty, for putting their happiness first.

Make a Man feel guilty for his self esteem, and you destroy his ambition.Thats exactly what the philosophers of Altruism intended. If you can destroy a Mans ambition, he's easier to control and manipulate, because then he won't care about anything.

The thing is, good Men and Women accept altruism, without understanding it's terrible history. They give up the values, that are most important to them, and then wonder why they're so miserable.

Now I'll tell you a few things about the Tories.Essentially they agree with the Labour party i.e they both support fascism. They believe that your life belongs to the state, and that they can sacrifice you in anyway they want. The only thing they differ on, is how YOUR money should be spent.

The Tories are finished. They, like Labour have no ideology or political code.In the next few years, middle of the road politics will make way for the extremes(consistent ideology). They'll be no sitting on the fence then!
