Surely any course that does not go directly to a summit and directly back down again is "contrived". The organiser is attempting to give you the most sporting / demanding route on the terrain that is available to him - hence the need for checkpoints. Your criticism of contrived could apply to such races as:- Winter Hill, Full & Half Tours of Pendle, almost any race that has more checkpoints than Start - Summit - Finish. Indeed the actual sport of fell running is contrived - why run to the top of a hill, only to run back down again? Because we do it for the fun of it! We don't do it to be logical!

I would agree. The time I did Winter Hill I thiought it was very contrived. Lots of races in the Lakes follow natural lines, akin to a good climb. More satisfying. If the race had finished by following the ridge up onto the last summit, before dropping down to the finish this would have been more of a natural line albeit a shorter race. If you're saying I'm not allowed to 'criticise' that is different.

    Fiendsdale

    Anyone doing this tomorrow?

Just read this report from "Rain Lady" on Metcheck Interactive.

    21 March 2008 : 17:53 GMT

SW Bowland 550ft. Clear now, but about 40 mins ago had a squally shower of snow, blowing horizontally. Lasted about 10 mins and lightly whitened the fells above 1000ft, but snow didn't stick here at this altitude. The N wind was awful, absolutely vicious and howling.
Doubt anyone could have stood up in it. Arctic pipeline indeed.
Temp dropped all afternoon. Now 2.7C.

    I'll be there Swoop - 1st race as a Vet 50!!
There should also be quite a good CLM contingent since it's the first club championship race of the year (fell that is).
    See you there
