    Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter

Think I saw a male hen harrier today at distance flying below Barrow Stones/Clough in the Peak District. Has anyone else seen hen harriers in this area?

The Forest of Bowland website shows the distinctive differences between the male and the female of the species.

I think it was a male hen harrier because it was a large greyish coloured bird (soaring/flapping slowly like a bird of prey) - don't know what else it could have been. Saw the same type of bird about two years ago in the same area - between Grinnah Stones and Bleaklow Stones. I have read that there are a couple of hen harriers in the Upper Derwent Valley.

Anyway, sighting it perked me up a bit after a couple of hours of bogtrotting along the Derwent Watershed on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon. My other wildlife encounter of the day was with a bog monster between Outer Edge and Margery Hill, into which I fell waistdeep! It took me a few minutes to extricate myself.

Not sure if it was the same bog actally. The one I fell into last time was I think after the Outer Edge trig whereas yesterdays close encounter was with a bog between Outer Edge and Margery Hill. Either way, I think someone should go up there with a few planks of wood and create a couple of bridges over the worst ones.

Three stoats ran across the lane 100 yards in front of me this morning and then stopped to have a rough and tumble amongst themselves as I drove up. Absolutely brilliant and they only ran into the undergrowth when I was about 10 feet away!
