The only section you may really have to worry about is the last bit after the last checkpoint. Is there any way you can get there prior to Dec for a recce of this section??

From what I remember it's very twisty turny and the darkness obviously doesn't help. The strip maps are however pretty easy to understand

Talking to people at the JW Ultra at the weekend the only navigational problems arise when you stop following strip map and following others instead. My plan is to finish while it's still light (just) so I can avoid any problems when very tired.

Like others have said, the strip maps (downloaded a few days before and waterproofed somehow) are very good. For other big events I sometimes do myself a series of Tracklogs sheets on A4 but never bothered for this event because the strip maps are so good. However, as others have also said, a reconnoitre of the last few sections is an excellent idea. I did that with a few friends last year on the previous day and it proved invaluable for after the last checkpoint when the head torch had to go on and the route became fiddly.
Would anyone be up for a recce this year? We did Maltby to the finish last year (less than 10 miles). Firbeck to the finish would be 15 miles. All we need is a kindly driver to abandon us to run back to the finish, or else some car shuttling would be required.
A convenient local hotel for Friday night accommodation is the Sandygate House Hotel, Wath Upon Dearne. It was ideal last year for a Friday recce and early Saturday start.

Chris, Emm is correct its pretty easy to follow.
The last part is easy but I led us the wrong way. Its not hard but at that point your mentally drained.

We got lost a few miles from the end last year too. From memory there's a right turn at the top of a hill and it's tempting to carry on incorrectly down the hill.

One other thing is if you're used to LDWA-type catering the food on this event is a bit minimalist (water and biscuits etc) apart from the main check-point at ~30mls, which was great!

I remember getting a marked up OS copy map (on a few pages) of the RRR when I entered last year, don't seem to be able to trace a copy though, sorry.

I would normally use the map for navigating this sort of thing, but I used the strip diagrams and there really were excellent, they show the relevant information in big enough pictures to save a lot of time on looking on a normal map. Mistakes were entirely my own stupidity. They did decay in the rain somewhere around 40 miles and I resorted to using the route description in combination with the map, and I found this much harder.

I can certainly recommend getting back before nightfall, no real navigation problems on the last part as you enter more built up areas when you can see where you're going! Setting off with the leaders whilst it was still dark was an experience, I expected people at that end of the field to know where they were going and someone to have a headtorch, but so much for that idea.

It's worth recceing anything you expect you may need to do in the dark.

Sorry Carol, Thanks for the offer but I'm racing on the 2nd and then the 15th and promised I'd only be away from home every other weekend so alternate weeks it's a run from the front door and home before 10 and not a drive away!

If the date falls right I may do this again in 2009.
