That was Split Nail or whatever his name is. If I were dead I'd be spinning in my grave!
Anyway, great to hear a good time was had by all. Wear those car stickers and t-shirts with pride.

""I wasn't aware that Mr Weir had joined the rescue services I thought he was a mine owner, a man of many faces.....""
...I'm sure it's spelled faeces...
Well done to all competitors, (and obviously pleased you all back safely) looked like a good but challenging weekend,.....brought back memories of 'the howlin Howgills' and the 'awful weather we had at Upper Nithsdale!!
Favourite comment last night was 'hundreds of people forced to brave the night at Buttermere'............ the presenter obviously wasn't aware..........that is the whole point of the event.......to navigate your way round the first day, tough out the overnight camp, then get back on day 2.
Its a test of skill, stamina & mountaincraft. IMO every team out there is responsible for their own safety and should be experienced enough to take part AT THIS TIME OF YEAR .......if they are not sure, pick an easier event, there are plenty about!!
Just back from Charity Race....yep, it was a grim day, yes it was windy: VERY and yes there was water: LOADS and FAST MOVING!
We made it to the overnight camp in our cut off time having bagged points!
And then it was announced it was over!
So, kettle on, warm, dry kit on, Andy Howie with shirt off (again!) and all was well...then we were advised to hoof up back up Honnister to Start Centre...a right laugh!
So, long story short - MR were a bit floppy...can we can't we...so, we holed up in slate centre..loads of hot drinks..no OMM Team but maverick owner shuttling us to Cockermouth rescue centre..media were having a laugh and a field day..going for disaster angle.
Sunday - great day to run and race in Borrowdale!kit shop visits in Kessi !
See you all next year!
This has been a dreadfull weekend for the future of the OMM. With all this publicity, every numpty in every city of the UK, that has completed the London Marathon dressed as a donkey, is going to want a piece of the action next year. Even now they will be polishing their credit cards and ordering 'equipment'. Oh god, what will 2009 bring.
I haven't read one single criticism of the event or organisers from any actual competitor, good on you all.
The 2008 OMM car sticker will already be a 'badge of honour', could have your car broken into and it nicked, they will probably all end up stuck to bloody great chelsea taxis in London.
Glad everyone made it back safely from the ' charity fun run'
Good of Mr Weir to provide warmth and shelter but by hell he sure got a good plug in for his business didnt he.
He probably knows as much about the concept of Mountain Marathons as I do about slate mining, BUGGER ALL !
No,I didnt compete as I dont consider myself a good enough navigator, sure I've done lots of AL races and followed the guy in front though.
I'm sure everyone was well equipped and knew exactly what they were doing. Well done to you all anyway.
What a fantastic weekend of mountaincraft and cameraderie.
Had a cracking day on the score event having finished with just a minute to spare! I had all the right kit so I was never wet from the elements or cold so was able to keep going. The most diffifcult to deal with was the high winds which slowed progression immensly (particulary as I'm lightweight), and sometimes couldn't even run downhill in fear of getting blown into a boulder or one of the rivers. (my mate got blown over 3 times and lost his map twice ~ the second time it was irretrieveable as it went up like a kite and probably somewhere in Scotland by now!)
When we finished at Gatesgarth we were told the event had been cancelled due to the overnight camp being under 2 feet of water! I was dissappointed yet relieved as I didnt fancy sleeping wet.
We were told to walk back to Seathwaite, which was feat in itself as the road up Honister pass was a river by that time, and with a headwind it was almost impossible to maintain progress. Arriving at Honister we were told that the Police said that Seathwaite was under water and the Borrowdale / Keswick road impassable and that we should return to Gatesgarth. Just what you need when you get an extra hour in bed!
After a night's kip in the barn at Gatesgarth (with about 800 or so others) I could have carried on for Day 2, particularly as the winds had subsided and the rain had stopped. Alas it was not to be.
So, another walk up Honister pass ensued, but this time in the dry, and then on to Seathwaite HQ for a 'Wilf's'.
After that we found our car was stuck in the mud on the parking field and it took about 8 guys to push it off ~ cheers for that. At least our car started, unlike some of those that had got caught in the swollen river and had to be towed away.
We heard on the Sunday morning that the news was all over the TV the previous day so we spent the next half hour phoning friends and relatives to confirm we were ok.
All in all, an eventful weekend, showing the true spirit and cameraderie of fellow competitors ~ a character building experience.
If you want my opinion as to the orgainisers decisions then:
1. Should the event have started ~ YES.
2. Should it have been cancelled after Day 1 ~ YES
Enough said !
