No, not California or even Ireland, but NW England. Any suggests please for somewhere to go this weekend for a day in Cumbria / Lancashire for a walk on a beach, a bit of informal bird-watching and some good fish and chips?

If you fancy a trip to Morecambe park up anywhere in the town and head for the promenade. Once on the prom if you are facing out towards the view across the bay start walking to your right towards Hest Bank.
Once you have passed the golf course on your right turn left (signpost VVV Leisure Club). Continue through their car park and on to a path which follows the shore line. You can use the cafe at the leisure club for a drink or there is the Shore Cafe about a mile further on near Hest Bank. Basically you can continue as far as you like along the shore but if you want to avoid a straight out and back walk there are various points where you can cut inland and do part of the return along the Lancaster canal.
I am not well up on bird watching but you do see some of them with their tripods near the entrance to VVV.
If you fancy this let me know and i will try to give you some more details and directions to a decent chippy. If you do the walk tomorrow and finish by 3.00 you could always take in the Morecambe v Cheltenham FA Cup tie
DT,
if you end up plumping for Morecambe/Arnside/Silverdale area take a visit to the RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss, plenty to see there :
