The Rhinog Horseshoe is everything you have heard and more. Seriously rough and remote. The only downside is that there are no lock-ins in the hotel afterwards!

    Re: my first year

Ahh the joys of fell running!
My first race was in 1980 (Lyme Park, where a certain Ron Hill complained about the rough bit across the tussocks). I didn't do much for a while after that due to a climbing accident; then a baptism of fire in '81 when I did my first "real" fell race: the Kentmere when it was held in early Spring. Weather was a bit grim, thick mist, sleet and wind. Got to High Street only by virtue of homing in on the bell which the marshalls were ringing! One of the marshalls grabbed hold of me by the shoulders and peered anxiously at my rolling eyes and said "Are you all reet lad?" I mumbled something about being fine and then as he released me, I blurted out, "I'm alright, but which way down is it"?

Still running and still enjoying it. Nowt better.

Daz, we seem to do a number of the same races so one day we should introduce ourselves. I'm also aiming for 3 shires this year (and borrowdale) but starting the year off with Lambs Longer leg and can't wait.

    hi novice

I won't be at Lamb's Longer Leg, I'm doing White Holme Circular this year

my other "deffo" races up to the end of May are:
Sun 11-Jan Reddish Vale Hit The Trail
    Sun 01-Feb Pennine Bridleway Relay
Sun 22-Feb High Legh 10k (road race)
    Sat 28-Feb High Cup Nick
    Sat 18-Apr Hawkshead Trail
    Sun 26-Apr Kinder Downfall
    Wed 13-May Blackstone Edge
    Sat 30-May Cader Idris

I have a shed-load of "possibles" as well: Ras Yr Aran, Wolf's Pit, Llantysilio, Rivi Pike, Herod Farm, Ravenstones, Wray Caton, Bollington Festival, Mount Famine, Goyt's Moss, Crowden Horseshoe, Shutlingsloe...

if I can manage Cader Idris OK, it will be 3Shires Here I Come!

    Re: my first year

Last night i finally found the motivation to be arsed enough to work out my yearly milage so heres my most anal post for a while of my first year of running.

Well i started in march and for a couple of months i was running maybe once, maybe twice a week, sometimes going weeks without a run. Towards the end of the year i managed to run alot more often until my knee went and buggered it all up.
I didnt run at all during July because i went on holiday and was working away down in Shrewsbury.

    March - 18.5 miles. - 6 runs.
    April - 15 miles. - 3 runs.
    May - 9.75 miles. - 4 runs.
    Jun - 23.5 miles. - 4 runs.
    July - 0 miles. - 0 runs.
    Aug - 18 miles. - 3 runs.
    Sept - 14 miles. - 3 runs.
    Oct - 47.1 miles. - 8 runs.
    Nov - 66.69 miles. - 8 runs.
    Dec - 18.15 miles - 3 runs.

43 runs in total, with 234.69 miles.

Furthest run - 18 something miles in Coniston with Merrylegs.

3 races - One 10k, The Roaches and Auld Lang Syne.

Shocking milage really but hopefully soon i'll be able to get it up to help me in races.

    Novice - That's the spirit!

I started fellrunning in 1986 and enjoyed every minute of it...well some in retrospect anyway.

Still have loads of ambitions but also still enjoy the same old races despite being laid up for most of last year with injuries.

But it's a new year and already started dreaming of Edale skyline, 3 peaks, Borrowdale, etc.

But then again I'll be pleased to get through this year uninjured.
Might try Tigger Tor later this month if all goes well
