Hadn't realised until now that he was also musically talented too!!

"This year, Jonathan Wyatt is celebrating 21 years as the band leader of East Anglia's premier big band. Established by the meastro when he was just seventeen years old, the band captures the sound of the big band era"

Highly impressive times all round, but he does seem particularly strong on the hills.

Last year we did parts of the Tour de Tirol in Austria. This was a 3 day event with a 10K, marathon (up 2 mountains, finish at 6,000ft) and half marathon.

He finished 3rd in the 10K (32:34), 4th in the half marathon (1:12:06) but won the mountainous marathon with a massive 15 min lead (3:06:43).

Kenny Stuart did 1:02:55 for the half and 2:11:36 for the marathon. I think the two of them would have had a great race!

Then there's Dave Cannon (2.11.22, as well as 46.33 for 10 miles)

and Ron Hill (2:09:28, 46.44) did quite a lot of fell races too.

But Jono's 1500m time is very impressive and I'll accept that no one else can match the range of his achievements!

Very interesting posts on here. Malky's comparisons with Kenny Stuart and Dave Cannon are particularly good although I suspect on a rough up and down course Kenny Stuart and Cave Cannon would have wiped the floor with Jonathan Wyatt.

Uphill running relates far more closely to cardio vascular fitness and leverage than does up and downhill running over rough ground which is far more down to technique.

Ron Hill ran 2.09 for a Marathon (about 15 seconds per mile quicker than Jonathan Wyatt) and has a reasonable claim to be one of the greatest distance runners of all time.

Interesting though how with age, his winning margins have slowly been slashed.......and I know there was that dog biting incident which obviously didnt help him the year he lost, but still.......

    Re: Jonathan Wyatt

What I find interesting about Wyatt is that he's combined a career on the mountains at the same time as a career as a roadie.

    28 July 2002 - 6th, Commonwealth Games (2:14:20)
    15 September 2002 - 1st, WMRT

Most marathon runner will train at altitude in the mountains anyways......and the world trophy is hardly tough terrain......don't get me wrong, there's still climbing but its all on fairly nice paths which suits the roadies
