Personally I think 65 mpw is fine. Depending on how long you've been doing such mileage may be why you feel lethargic. If you've only just started to up your miles then you will be tired. I'm 9 weeks into building my mileage up and I'm only just starting to notice the real benefits. I do the same 4 quality sessions over the month and next week is the real show as to whether my training is going well. Over the month with upping my mileage though I've seen my 5x1000 session on the grass improve by over 10 seconds a rep. Provided you can maintain your mileage you should notice a difference really. 65mpw isn't mega mileage and recovery should be possible. Listen to what your body says if you do feel shattered one night then theres no point in going and murdering yourself for it. Adjustments to training do take along time to get used to properly. You have to remember the 3P's is 24 miles in length but time wise should take you longer than a Marathon unless your marathon is really slow. Whatever mileage you put in make sure its consistant. My training last year was 10 one week then 60 the next then 30 you get the picture. This year its 45-50 and only had one blip in there at 26 or 28

Why not follow a standard marathon training plan, there's plenty ont' tinterweb; just adapt it to include plenty of hills and off-road stuff.

Don't know if Igor is doing his 15 milers on the flat, but personally I reckon I go anaerobic as soon as I hit a hill.

    Re: Three Peaks Training

Hi Guys, just reading about everyone's training for this year's 3 Peaks.
I did it last year for the first time, after converting from a road runner to the fells 3 months previously. My mileage was around 50, and although I still kept up my speed sessions (km reps, mile reps), I found training on the course helped me no end and above all knowing where I could push and where I could hang back. Like that bloody long boring bit between Penyghent and Ribblehead! I think there's a lot of luck involved too, I absolutely died with the cramp going up Whernside and coming off Ingleborough.

I have had tons of advice on keeping the cramp at bay, but I honestly think in my case it was just naivety and didn't eat/drink properly. I only ate powerbars, which let's face aren't the best thing and I only drank water. Hopefully this year I will have a decent race and get well under 4 hours.

Oh if I was giving anyone any advice on the race it would be to make sure you have something left for the terrible climb up those steps on Ingleborough and the long run in from the top. 20 people must have overtaken there!

Anyone else noticed that quite a few of the entries from our neighbouring European countries have very English sounding names?

There is a John Clough from Italy (followed by a Lynne Clough from Chorley).

And a Martin Cox from France.

Then there is that well known runner Billy Burns from the Swiss village of Salford.

I wonder why this could be?

On track, its all here except i couldn't do the LDWA because of shin splints. Mileage typically 39/week, usually over 4 days, plus mincing on a fitball once a week.

How is your training going steve?

Have any experienced fell runners got any useful training tips in anticipation of running the three peaks in April? It's my first time.

Practise going up very, very steep grassy hillsides

Don't worry about any fancy training. Just get some miles in. Preferably on the hills.

Plan your eating and drinking for the day.

Give it a reccy if you can so you know what you've gotto do. Navigation shouldn't be a problem.
