I hate the fact that an 80 year old who is being hunted down by the grim reaper can run a fell race yet a fit 16 year old cannot. No wonder the talent is drying up.
Can see where you're coming from in some respects, but have a look through the calender and i think there are chances for those between 16-18 to race for 40-50 mins even upto an hour depending on your ability. Obviously you've seen the welsh 1000 which is even longer 2 hours ish. But look at Lingmell dash jebbys record 45 mins you can do that at 16, dalehead same sort of time, dunnerdale later on is a good 50 mins. You've got plenty of time once over 18 to do lakeland classics if you are very keen now why not got some maps from pete bland sports and start reeceing them so you are fully prepared once old enough.

As an oap I would advise training for the distance. I know it's not a long race compared to the full distance but 10 miles and 4000ft of climb is no sprint. Don't forget, you still have to get yourself off the top. Most of it is runnable but there are a few very steep bits which on the day may be worth a fast walk to over them. There is also a strength sapping boggy bit after you cross the stream before Pen-y-pass.

    Welsh 1000M Peaks Race

    Advice and info please!

I'm wanting to do this race this year, but unfortunately can't get a weekend away in time to recce the route. I know bits of it, but not enough to link it together, so how is route finding on this race?

Also, how tough a race is it? My longest fell race to date is Borrowdale. I know there's a bit of extra distance and ascent, but how does it compare?

    Any other tips gratefully received!

    thanks

I'm doing this for the first time this year. Now I know about not relying on following people and i'm a competent map reader blah blah blah, BUT is the field actually close enough to be able to follow the rouet?

I'm roughly a 3:30 marathoner so I should be middle (?) of the pack. Basically can I tuck my map away and follow the pack for most of the way?

I've not done the race but used to live in the area and I'd reckon on at least keeping the map to hand and having an idea of where you are - the Carneddau in particular can be pretty disorientating on the tops if visibility isn't good. Also getting down from the Glyderau to Pen y Pass isn't obvious even in good visibility and the field is likely to be spread out by then.
