Don't need a licence for internet tv, DT. It's not a "live transmission". I may be corrected though! Why should i pay licence fees when my local area has no news coverage?

We don't have a tv signal here, so if I wanted tv I'd have to deface my lovely chapel with a sattelite dish! No way is that going to happen.

I also thought you did not need a licence for watching iPlayer, but then a friend said to me that every 'unit' that is capable of relaying a tv signal has to have one... Mind you, this is not a tv signal, but I was told that even having a tv-set to play dvd's without having a signal will attract a fine if you don't have a licence!

You only need a licence for live TV. iPlayer doesn't count. A telly for DVD's might probably need a licence if it has a tuner in it as it's capable of receiving TV signal, even if you don't / can't. You don't need a licence for a big PC monitor to watch DVD's on.

The most I ever watch the TV is at work now, most of it is just a load of rubbish. Iplayer allows you to catch the good stuff, and the rest is not worth the time wasted.

The BBCs output is not within my realm of decision making unfortunately dom they pay someone a lot more than to pay me, to make those kinds of stupid decisions!

I reckon I could quite happily live without a TV I don't really watch it.

You're right when you say you only need a licence if you watch live visual programming. This holds true irrespective of the device used to watch the content; if you stream live video over the internet to your computer or to your mobile, you are liable for the licence fee, even if you do not possess a television. As stated previously, services like iPlayer are alright if the content isn't live.
Conversely, you do not have to pay a licence fee if you own a television, even with a built-in tuner, and use it exclusively to watch previously recorded material, such as on DVDs. This would probably be rather hard to prove, but thankfully burden of proof to the contrary lies with the TV licencing agency.
These changes to the law were brought in to cope with the evolving way we are using technology to watch programmes. It's not really a TV licence any more.

Most of the output is dross, including the freeview channels. Haven't got time to scrutinse listings on the odd chance that there'll be something half decent on. Resort to watching lots o' films if we want to watch anything.

TV? Lowest common denominator stuff indeed.
