We had a pigeon on the window sill at work today. It sat there for about 30 mins - could have been longer but I went home. I reckon it was a racing pigeon because it was tagged. Everyone else thought I was mad. They're probably right though...

Read in paper this week it was a 'Painted Lady' year (they're butterflies ). They arrived in mid Wales today, dozens of them coming up the valley and into the garden, had a walk on the hill and they were being blown over the tops. Guess there must be millions of them arrive in the UK? Anyway, great to see.

Otherwise a bloody swallow, they decided that as we leave the bedroom window open, our bedroom would be a great nesting site. Plus we would appreciate being woken at 5.00am by them twittering on the windowsill .

Got buzzed by curlew going over to Shelf Moor across Bleaklow then a yellow or grey wagtail in the brook - how do you tell the difference between them - I know one is quite common and the other quite rare?

Grey wagtail has a grey head and back, with yellow underneath, particularly so under the tail.

Yellow wagtail has a russet brown back and much more yellow underneath - on breast and belly.

Grey Wagtails are the common one - live here all year. Yellows are summer visitors - quite striking.
