Me & Langdale Legs are in !

I'll be using my RAB Quantum 250 bag ~ it's good down to zero degrees.

Not sure if I like the look of that river on the Programme though ~ I bet it could get a bit swollen

Lets hope they position the overnight camp a bit higher up this year

On the subject of OMM 2009 I note that the Builth Wells showground is to be used on Friday for the WRC Wales Rally GB service park. Hope the organiser know this. The rally goes on until Sunday so will mean a lot of extra traffic in the area on the journey home. Oh Joy!

OK, so I'm an OMM virgin.
Got loads of fell running kit but lots of it is old.
Can I ask the experienced forumites what they think the 'must-have' items of kit are?

Where to start? As little as possible as long as you stay within the rules & stay safe. The lightest of everything you can get if you have to have it. Enough sugar of 1 sort or another to keep you going through the days, & enough starch & fat-based food to refuel overnight. No teddy bear. No pyjamas. There's a fair bit of stuff on the OMM forum so it's worth browsing through that. Aim at carrying under 5kg each if you can afford the lightweight kit, & starting off with 5000 to 6000 kcals of food each. I'm sure others will disagree, but that's been working for us.

Thanks Splatcher. I've looked at the OMM forum but reading the kit discussions it sounds like a lot of...how shall I say this without being disparaging...non-fell orientated adventure runners who are kit and comfort junkies. Although I do recognise some forumites on there!

20 years of fell running plus the odd long distance event gives you a pretty honed idea of what works and what does not. I'm all for lightness but, for example, I'm not sure my trusty 1989 vintage PB fell suit would pass muster even though it still works fine and packs small. If I'm going to invest in new kit I want to find the critical must haves from the point of view of an experienced minimalist fell runner.

They been selling the Haglofs stuff at MMs this year and last, but I haven't splashed out myself yet - it's not cheap. I only wear overtrousers when I lie down to die, but I've ordered some proper ones this time. Lightest serious ones I could find were Golite Reed, & ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk seem to be selling them cheap (but have no mediums). Remember I'm not planning on running in these, so I don't care much what the cut is. Anyone else tried these?
I'm going to take a Paclite jacket if the weather's anything like last year, & a cheap (£30) 300gm lightweight "mac in a sac" jacket with a label that says "waterproof" if it's looking better.
We've all go to make our own calls about what's safe & what may get through the rules. We pulled out of last year's OMM after one checkpoint as we didn't really have enough clothing for the conditions, but we were well within the rules (& yes, I was wearing the Paclite). And the guy who would have won the elite class in this year's SLMM was disqualified for only having a sheet sleeping bag.

You really really need a balloon bed though...

The Up and Running kit catalogue hat came with the entry paperwork seems V expensive. £150 for a 3 season sleeping bag? A 1kg gelert is only £45 on Amazon. Hmm...some serious research needed here!
What size rucsac can you manage with? 30 L or less?

OMM virgin my self. Using fell gear in a 25L rucksack. Have a look at the alpkit site and likeys. I splashed out a bit, but the way i see it is, quality gear should hopefully last a long time.
