In a previous post you were asking about pack size. If you can get in all in a 25L bag it will be under 5kg (unless you carry a lot of water - not advised). 30L gives you the opportunity to make it a bit heavy, and some people do fill 35L bags for an MM but they can't do much running.

IMHO, if you are going for a 1kg sleeping bag you're in the 30L bag range (and probably 6kg). As an infrequent MMer that is probably not a bad thing, you won't have to buy all the kit just to get it in your pack. Like you say no point shelling out on expensive kit if it's not going to get used much.

Stick with what you've got for your first MM.
The chances are that either it'll also be your last, or you'll end up doing 3 or 4 per year at least - at which point spending money on lightweight kit suddenly becomes justifiable :-)

Earlier on you asked what the 'must-have' items of kit are. The short answer is:
    1. everything on the mandatory kit list
    2. nothing else

How rigidly you stick to this depends largely on your tolerance to suffering abject misery for 24 hours

Just go to the local spar once you've got your tent up.

Thanks one and all. Some really useful steers here. Thinking cap is on!
Must check with partner about the tent/stove thingies...he says he's got em, but how much do they weigh!
Toreador, the point about suffering and misery is well made. Answer is 'lots' for a short period of time. It can't be as bad as 3 Peaks yacht race when you have to do massive runs at daft hours after being nearly drowned/ rowed all night/eaten sailors rations/generally abused as a crew member!

A must have is two plastic bags to wear over your dry socks in your freezing cold wet shoes at the overnight camp

Got loads of fell running kit but lots of it is old.
Can I ask the experienced forumites what they think the 'must-have' items of kit are?
It might be a bit far to travel Wheeze but Accelerate in Sheffield are having a Mountain Marathon evening at their shop.

On 11th Sept 7.00pm onwards we are going to have an Accelerate in store Mountain Marathon Evening in conjunction with Terra Nova. The idea is to have talks on “how to do a mountain marathon” everything from, gear, packing, navigation, hill skills etc. We are going to have a raffle with Mountain Rescue as the charity. Already got some great prizes.
You should be able to get your hands on the kit and ask those questions you want answering. I'll post this on the Equipment thread as well.

I'll let you if any other details emerge.
    Ian

I'll be there It should be a good evening
