Well, started the kit buying spree yesterday. Bought the OMM Classic 32l mountain marathon sac and a new set of helly base layers (the old ones ran away). Found a Vango Venom 150 on t'internet at £54.95. Seems good value for a 650g down bag. Anyone used one?
Wheeze, Moley has a VV150, it won't keep you very warm, you'll need to snuggle up with someone/thing. Don't think he'll be using his though PM him and find out. Elan in October -Brrrrrrr chilly!!!!
You are welcome to borrow my Venom, but it is not for cold nights and weighs about the same as my Alpkit bag, which is much, much warmer.
Regards tents, we best liase here, not sure what OBW has? But I have a Terra Nova laserlight comp (which I use for my 'solo' nights out on the hills) but no way am I fitting me and missus into that for a long wet night in the Elan - you are welcome to borrow that as well, trust you are 'very good' friends.
Also have our trekking tent, Hilleberg Nallo2 gt, this is enormous by MM standards and room to have a party inside (bring own whiskey). But it only weighs 2.6 kilos (equivalent of a cheap standard 2 man MM tent) and we are just having a bimble round so I don't mind the weight. Options to be decided.
Guess we better have the official entry first before we are too excited.
Molehill - given your local knowledge, what would be your view of drinking from streams in Elan?
Elan is renowned for its constant water supply (supplies most of Birmingham I think), Did an event back there earlier in the year and if you like peat bog you'll love it. I would be happy drinking from where the water flows quick in the streams - and there's plenty of them, but perhaps less so from the stationary areas - the whole place is like a giant sponge - quite easy to sink to your waist in the boggy bits if you fail to make the next tussock

Looking at Mark H's winning time last year - by all accounts its going to a bit of a challenge in itself!

I've been drinking the water there for 20 years and I'm still perfectly normal(other than the courgette fetish). I have been selective though, I certainly wouldn't advise taking water from the lower rivers where farms are in the area. I chose mine from up high, also in dry conditions (unlikely) I am very careful about water sources. The water comes off the peat, so it naturally looks brown and discoloured - don't be put off.
Yes, it's ok but be selective and sensible.
Pumlumon challenge is a good event, done it a few times. It is NOT the same as running the Elan valleys. Well, bits of it are, but far more hills in Pumlumon and better tracks to follow and easy navigation (even the Missus managed it). It is a good training run (for bogs
