I find I have the best control descending when on the drops... both in handling the bike and in stopping power, i.e. hand position on the brakes...
I treated myself to RED brakepads for 3 Peaks last night![]()
"most cross riding is done on the hoods or bar-tops"
these two positions are very different
Having watched every World Cup CX race for the last 3 years I'd say a more accurate statement, imo, would be 'most cx racing is done on the hoods or drops'
having said the above...the only photos I have of myself from cx races I have my hands on the tops and am powering through mud
but then, I'm a rank amateur
and have cross top levers![]()
I tend to be on the tops when climbing up something steep but not very technical... rest of the time, I tend to be on the drops mostly as I find it gives me more control...
But going really steeply donwhill on the drops is somewhat scary, as if I am about to be launched over the handlebars head first...
I have no idea what other poeple do, I only just started riding a cross bike off road and just do what makes me feel most confident...
Whichever bike I am on I am rarely on the drops - don't like the feeling, much prefer the hoods. Each to their own.
