That'll be down to the Duke of Edinburgh I imagine. He must really hate kids.

They were indeed some very polite and pleasant young ladies from Westholme school.
    Their packs did seem enormous!
Loads of kids aren't soft- mine ( and a number of others) have started doing MMs with me SLMM this year and Phoenix Long O and I know the elder has his eye on the LAMM or OMM

and before the child protection starts- you couldn't make them do what they don't want to, especially the youngest!!

Yes there politeness and cheerfulness was a joy, good to hear your kids are showing an interest in active / thinking sports.

There is hope yet that the upcoming generations are becoming more aware, so look out you HP 40 vets (and many other events) that lead way there could soon be young challengers

Has anyone found the photos that were being taken at the sharp dip into the valley towards the end??

nikalas, I figured I was chatting to you going through goyt valley.
yep, that'll be me... I think then you passed me at the Hollins Cross CP whilst I was faffing, I then passed you as I crucified myself on the "Road to Hell" and then you came back past me shortly afterwards as I paid for it!

They seemed really happy at the top of Cave Dale when they asked me how to get to Tideswell and I was able to tell them to just follow the pink arrows.... what's with the ridiculously large packs though? Does the Duke insist they carry bricks to toughen them up or are they out on the hills for weeks?

I wondered whether they had to carry a minimum weight, but apparently not. There's a kit list I think, but most of the kids don't have access to lightweight stuff, so most of it's going to be cheap heavy stuff. And then most of them take loads of stuff they "can't possibly do without". I remember taking all sorts of stuff I didn't need when I started backpacking in my teens - we all got to learn from our mistakes. You don't usually learn the trick of learning from other people's mistakes until you're a bit older, I suspect.

Don't know exactly how to play it when my elder daughter starts DOE in a couple of years time. She's already used to lightweight backpacking, & if I lend her my lightweight gear (tent etc) to add to what she's already got she'll be carrying a fraction of what most of them will carry, & risk being seen as an oddity as a result. Maybe we'll get a big pack & fill it out with polystyrene so it looks the part but weighs next to nothing...

DofE there was a thread about this earlier in the year.

they are given a mininmum kit list but then they fill up with extra stuff,
a lot is to do with Parents looking after little Jonny put in that extra jumper etc

I made one group pack there backs and bring them to school. they turned up with 65-80l sacks!!!! we then emptied about 40% of the kit out as superflous.

I did warn them it would be warm the next day and have enough liquid.
When they turned up one had refilled his 75lt sack AND brought a suitcase.
another girl was really struggling mid day so I offered to take som weight out of her sack. I could barely lift it. there were 2x 2l coke bottles in there as well as the water we had handed out at the start!!

    It's all experience!

    Re: High Peak 40

Hiya all, this was my 3rd attempt. Failed the previous 2 as a walker, so decided to give it a go as a runner and feared slightly better finishing in a time of 7h30m28s.

I couldnt have been more pleased with my effort.

Does anyone know if those pictures from the dip have materialised?

    Many thanks.
