The one part of this event which really detracts from the overall sense of wild and bleak moors is, of course, the run down the Snake Road from Upper North Grain to the checkpoint at the Snake Inn.
Last year the traffic seemed worse than ever, with one or two foolish drivers seeing how close they could get to the runners. It's only a matter of time and the law of averages before our luck here runs out.
I would have thought that there might be a way of forcing the runners to take an off-road route here by relocating the checkpoint from the Snake Inn to somewhere near the confluence of the Ashop and Lady Clough (or maybe a little further north where you might get vehicular access) so that runners could take the opportunity to get onto the path down the East side of the Ashop and cut almost all of the dangerous road running out.
Just a thought.

Why not have the CP at the small lay-by on the A57/Upper North Grain junction, cross the road to pick up path in the woods by Lady Clough, cross the Ashop and rejoin original path. Make the road out of bounds.

That looks like the ideal solution Yiannis!
yes this was discussed last year and will probably be discussed this year. It does have it's plus's but support becomes a problem as we can have 40-60 cars trying to park up, this is ok when spread out along the valley.
The best place for supporters to park (and remember they don't currently park near the checkpoint) is in the huge layby at the bottom of Birchen Clough. To intercept runners on the off-road path would only take a minute or so from here. It would just be a question of providing this info on the pre-race flyer. You could point out that they can buy a brew there too - but they will already know as many supporters already use the Birchen Clough stop.
Of course there's also parking and access at Nether North Grain and the forest road opposite the end of the Roman Road - again points currently used by supporters.
I think if something along the lines of Yiannis's suggestion were used, and everyone was informed, it wouldn't make a great deal of difference to what supporters had to do.
Runners would be a little bit slower than on the road - but, hey, this is a fell race, isn't it?
And Mr Plummer would have a better night's sleep!

It was only my feet that froze. Then rest stayed nice and warm due to some kind of exertion that I seemed to be engaged in at the time. It's taken a long time for my toenails to become recognisable as such again.
