I personally cannot see any issue with producing a film, if it is done right, and the dangers are highlited.

I agree, I'm a johnny-come-lately southern fellrunning f*ckwit, and I love the hills as much as anyone!

I thought about how you'd go about being an extra, but then thought better of it. Can you imagine - "Scene 57: Great Gable climb on the Borrowdale race - take 23". Bugger that.

I've heard the final scene will go something like:

"Arrggh Billy Bland, by running the fastest ever Bob Graham Round, you have defeated my plan to take over the world."

Supervillain escapes in rocket ship (setting up the sequel "feet on the moon"). Billy gets the girl - Miss Bighills - and she says "Ooh Billy" as the fog descends.

There's also the danger that it may attract more people just for the challenge, without the genuine love of the hills and the sport. This could then lead to gel wrappers on the hills, queue jumping at stiles, etc. because they just don't get the ethos.

queue jumping, dropping of gel wrappers, people soooo involved in the challenge they don't see the landscape/take it for granted occur in pretty much every race i've done

perhaps should ban all the established fell runners and get some new blood instead ?

personally i've persuaded quite a few new people to have a go at fell running...can't see any negatives for them or anybody else in that

    Managing erosion and numbers

On the conversation with the old guard and routes like motorways unlike 10 years ago. There are always two ways to look at this. The environmental issues like soil erosion etc were all known about many years ago. I would say now getting closer 30 or 40 than ten years and maybe the issue was that either in the past fellrunning was ignorant of this or were not as environmentally minded as claimed. I don't see a problem with more people coming into the sport so long as we manage the environmental issues carefully. I think we mustn't say that race must follow the same route it has for 40 years because we will destroy the countryside. We should be prepared to move the races around whilst of course staying in the relative locale or if need be give some races a rest and help with repairing the countryside that is dear to us. That way the sport can handle many more people and it will last a very long time with minimal environmental damage and in the end surely that's what most of us want to be able to enjoy in 30 or 40 years time instead of being stick in the muds and bring the death knell of the sport about in that time due to environmental damage.

Partly sarcastic that point (maybe a would have helped). You're right: there already is a small %ge of current fell-runners responsible for this (and worse...number folding!!), much as we might try and blame this on road-runners playing at getting dirty (another warranted I think).

Obviously though, increase the overall number of participants, even if the %ge of idiots remains the same, it means there's more of them, which means a bigger impact on delicate environments.

I also try and talk the odd person into it. Yet to have any takers!!

Oh and if you want to be an extra find out the production company and call them and say there is a whole forum of people who could do this. Lets face it if there is to be a film rather have the genuine article as supporting artistes as when watching it will seem more authentic due to correct technique etc.

    it's a queer one isn't it

if my history serves me right not really that long ago since folk walked out of manchester factories from under the blankets of smog on to kinder for a beating by the old guard's lackey game keepers for their trespass

yet some people who enjoy the wildness don't really want to share it, especially with folk they seem to think as foreigners to themselves ....they covet the exclusiveness and decry change when change brought them the gifts they treasure

isn't it better for more folk to enjoy the benefits....they'll be a few more bad uns but probably alot more good uns...ie a secure future

didn't last of the summer wine once use someone like Halifax Wheelers to all crash their bikes at the bottom of the hill ,
Perhaps we could have a scene where all these 100's of fellrunners disappear over a cliff off Scafell Pike like lemmings. oops forgot, its all ready been done, is it called Borrowdale?
