Sorry but I think you don't understand the ramifications of your own argument, you need to think it through a bit more.

And who decides it a price worth paying for what is eseentially a leisure activity. I doubt many of us would want to stop running offroad but even less would say "and I don't give a toss" which is your implication.

I think basically Hursty is saying you can't discriminate against people entering fell races or using the countryside as an amenity for recreation because of their age, if this whole thread is a wind up it's really funny.

We should be thinking longer term & more strategically. The only viable solution to this and so many other present-day problems is to address the problem that there are too many people, and this problem is getting worse as populations increase. Personally I'm against the traditional solutions to this: war, famine, pestilence. Not too keen on the Chinese legal sanctions either. Drunken driving is no longer socially acceptable - should having more than 2 children be seen as socially acceptable? We should be thinking in terms of managing the world population over time down to, say 10% of current numbers & keeping it there. Of course I've no idea how to achieve this, but at least I'm prepared to say it needs doing, which is more than the politicians are prepared to do.

Otherwise - numbers keep on increasing until there is either war, famine, pestilence or legal oppression. There'll be more erosion on the fells, less water to drink, more global warming etc etc.

I think there is a little more to land errosion than a few people enjoying open spaces.

I have pointed this problem out with some solutions on the film thread but don't know how to bring it over here on this thread.

I've only just looked at this thread. I think it needed a more sensational headline to draw me in, such as "younger runners to be banned".

AS once again shows us the advantage of not using smilies. Some people take the bait, others point and laugh. There's something for everyone in this thread.

Excellent observations by Splatcher! But in all fairness to Antisocial, he has the best interests of the youngsters at heart: Taking up fell running at the age of Young Dave Foulup or UKhursty, they will just end up with knackered knees before they have chance to graduate into the V40 ranks!
