    more on a wintry theme....

    A Spell before Winter

After the red leaf and the gold have gone,
Brought down by the wind, then by hammering rain
Bruised and discolored, when October's flame
Goes blue to guttering in the cusp, this land
Sinksdeeper into silence, darker into shade.
There is a knowledge in the look of things,
The old hills hunch before the north wind blows.

Now I can see certain simplicities
In the darkening rust and tarnish of the time,
And say over the certain simplicities,
The running water and the standing stone,
The yellow haze of the willow and the black
Smoke of the elm, the silver, silent light
    Where suddenly, readying toward nightfall,
    The sumac's candelabrum darkly flames.
And I speak to you now with the land's voice,
It is the cold, wild land that says to you
A knowledge glimmers in the sleep of things:
The old hills hunch before the north wind blows.

I really loved Xrunner's and HHH's offerings on serendipity!

Freckle, your wintery offerings are wonderful and have me excited about returning in January to some cold weather and frosty runs (I do hope it doesn't just keep on raining).

    Near Winter

    Let winter now come

    ox-laden sky
    cold spume of rivers
    nakedness of moors
    mist in the forest
    let winter now come

    the spoor of animals
    blue melting in the snow
    th sun polished hard
    birds and berries
    bronzen shadow
    water icy and thin
    black crust of the earth
    hoar glint of stone
    let winter now come

    seaweed covers the moon
    wind harrows the firth
    the islands glint in fog
    I fish in cold waters
    my boat black as tar
    the horned rowlocks
    creak to the oar

    let winter now come

Hi all...some lovely words on here today, Hes loved the wintry poem and tri your verse was funny!....Not sure if this classifies as poetry or not but being with my daughter today inspired me to write something totally off the cuff....needs work but here goes! (Apologies if it seems self indulgent!!!!!!!)

    Jo Jo

Born apache style on the living room floor, a force of nature, that’s wor Jo Jo .

Initial impressions, a quiet one, feeding and sleeping like a dream, never far away from your mother's breast, such an easy babe.

With language and mobility, the kernel of your self emerges, quite a different species.

“I’m here everyone” you announce in the nursery playground, energy and affection knowing no bounds.

Hair ala Richard Harris, a passion for seaton sluice playground, taken with the utmost seriousness that only other 3 year olds would "get".

Fearless of the cold you refuse coats, nana frets. You tackle the climbing wall with aplomb!

So many things I never wish to forget in this version of you.

A surprising cockney lilt (wonder where that came from?) .

Made all the more beautiful by its temporary nature, knowing that soon it will morph seamlessly into “yer naa’s”.

Descriptions of “bunder storms” and your masochistic terror of trolls.

Even your tantrums endear, revealing an utter lust for life long forgotton in us adults.

Your signature... sucking your thumb whilst tugging on my ear, a throwback to that early tender symbiosis I so enjoyed.

I know it can’t always be this way, nor should it.

But for now I cherish this little you and our favourite time

Thursday afternoon snoozing in unison on the sofa!

    on a different note now...

    "You Walked Gently Towards Me"
    Ben Okri

    You walked gently towards me
    In the evening light
    And brought silence with you
    Which fell off when
    I touched your shoulder
And felt the rain on it.

    We went through the city
    Up the roaring streets
    Full of many lights
    And we sought a place
    To be alone
    And found none.

    The evening was merciful
    On your smile.
    Your laughter touched
    The hungry ghosts
    Of passing years.

    You moved smoothly
    On the waters
    Your shadow sounded of silk
    You led me to places
    Full of mellow darkness
    Secret coves where they
    Didn't let us in
    And under the rain
You bid me kiss you with
    Your silent and uncertain eyes.

    We walked home
And the rain laughed around us
    With its insistent benediction
And you hair was strung with
    Diadems
    Your face with glittering dreams
    And my eyes were wet
    With your luminous spirited joy

has this been posted b4? ...in case i love it!
