The definitive headtorch post

Just bought my first ever headtorches - not for anything tricky - just to be able to take a small group of us away from the main roads on winter evening runs - in to some of the unlit backroads or tracks around Witton.

A Black Diamond Spot is the main one for the lead runner and a Petzl Tikka for the tail runner in the group.

5 of us went out last week and had no problems at all.

Both lights are fine for general individual use. They together light adequately for a small group.

The Spot is a better option and I would be confident of going on to fell with that - but not with the Tikka.

Both are light weight and easy to run with.

Yes, it was a stupid amount of dosh (no lottery win for me either ) but worth every penny. I was a big girly wuss in the dark & would get spooked by everything, didn't even much like running on the dark lanes round us, forget the off road. Now i'm quite happy trogging off on my own, over the moors, through the woods. Its fantastic, has revolutionised my winter running

I will certainly be looking for the Ultra as i have a tikka and it's ok but it sounds like the ultra is a winner.

I bought an ultra last week and went out with it last night on a pitch black lane out the back of Horton and only needed the second setting. very impressed with it

Right then. Thinking of getting a Hope Vision 4, if the option of buy now pay in 12 months works.

How do I turn it into a headtorch? Doesn't seem to come with a head strap.

I was lucky enough to get one of the Silva Alpha Six head lamps to trial/review and it kicks the botty of the Petzl Ultra.... even good enough for night-time mountain biking.

And for a very similar price to a Petzl Ultra, you could have a Hope Vision 4, with twice the light output! And crafted with love in Barnoldswick, to boot! As opposed to moulded on a plastics production line in Frog-land. That is how Hope get the full output from their LEDs, the machined aluminium housing acts as a heat sink, whereas Petzl go for a moulded plastic housing ( cheap & easy manufacturing ) that will not dissipate the heat, hence the LEDs have to be throttled back even on the highest setting.

Yes! You go for the Hope Vision 4 Adventure, as I understand it! Adventure = Bike lamp + Head harness

It's a great lamp no doubt but, with the head unit weighing in at 150g, I wouldn't fancy it on my noggin. If you're a runner and a biker I think the Silva is a far more versatile lamp.
