    Re: Today's poet

    I listened to Van Morrison's Summertime in England driving to work this morning. Not sure if its on youtube but all the lads get a mention, Wordsworth and Coleridge, TS Elliot, William Blake. A fifteen minute plus epic and what will be my soundtrack to spring and early summer 2010 I think

    Our boys.

    Sleep a peaceful sleep my beautiful boys,
    Dream all wondrous things and playing with your toys,
    Thoughts of joy and love passing gently through your mind,
    Your wonderful weekends with nana so gentle and kind.

    We will watch over you keep both of you near,
    There will always be somewhere safe for both of you here,
    Your both bound to grow up that much is sadly true,
    But your mummy and daddy will always love you.

    Re: Today's poet

    It feels like a sleepy night tonight after a busy weekend. We've not had a Carol Ann Duffy for a little while...

    A Child's Sleep

    I stood at the edge of my child's sleep
    hearing her breathe;
    although I could not enter there,
    I could not leave.

    Her sleep was a small wood,
    perfumed with flowers;
    dark, peaceful, sacred,
    acred in hours.

    And she was the spirit that lives
    in the heart of such woods;
    without time, without history,
    wordlessly good.

    I spoke her name, a pebble dropped
    in the still night,
    and saw her stir, both open palms
    cupping their soft light;

    then went to the window. The greater dark
    outside the room
    gazed back, maternal, wise,
    with its face of moon.

    In my dreams
    by Stevie Smith

    In my dreams I am always saying goodbye and riding away,
    Whither and why I know not nor do I care.
    And the parting is sweet and the parting over is sweeter,
    And sweetest of all is the night and the rushing air.

    In my dreams they are always waving their hands and saying goodbye,
    And they give me the stirrup cup and I smile as I drink,
    I am glad the journey is set, I am glad I am going,
    I am glad, I am glad, that my friends don't know what I think.

    Ha ha. It was wishful thinking on my part too. I can hear various part-sung christmas carols coming from one, and general bawling from t'other.

    I can picture it now. 30 seconds of quietness then volume back up again!

    It works a little for Cameron but he's started saying "sorry Santa" for every little misdemeanour he does, so I think we might have gone a tad too far.
