    It has been a long and testing road this, but i have decided to go for the Utlra 2 before it goes up in price, the 16 hour 55 min burn time, & with a max 120 m beam on the short cycle, with a 345g weight, and the multi coloured head band that swayed it for me

    Here is my latest homemade.

    Only run it up to about 300 Lumen with the small battery, put the 40g heavier one on and it will do 500+ Lumen.

    On the comercial front Fenix have the HL10 (4AA) with 220 Lumen for reasonable money and are introducing twwo new models HL15 (2AA) and HL20 (1AA) which look interesting.

    The best bang for the buck by far is the Magicshine quality can be a bit variable and it's more like 500-600 Lument not 900 but for the price it's a great deal.

    Hello All,

    For value for money, you can't go very far wrong with the following from Alpkit,

    http://www.alpkit.com/shop/cart.php?...ategory_id=253

    I've been using mine for about a year now on the fells and wouldn't be without it. Variable beam length and colour (for map reading), light on the back to lead off the hills, central band etc etc. Probably sacfrifice a bit in weight but its negligible really...fifteen quid!

    Price to lumens ratio - it's a winner!

    Alpkit = £15 for 51 lumens = 1:3
    MagicShine £52 = for say 5-600 lumens = 1:10
