    Eastern Lakes

I'll be staying in Longsleddale in the spring and was wondering whether anyone has any tips for runs in the area.

I'm planning to do Sadgill/ Gatescarth/ Harter/ Kentmere/ Sadgill, but what other hidden gems are there?

    thanks!

from Harter fell ( overlooking Haweswater) you can carry on over the next pass onto Thorneythwaite beacon, then onto High Street ( overlooking Ullswater) or cross over by Kirkstone pass and go up onto red screes that would then take you across onto Fairfield and then Lakes are your oyster from there.
depends how far you want to travel of course

    Good point!

Will be there with the family, so am kinda limited to runs of a couple of hours.

Thanks for the tip about Kirkstone - hadn't thought about that.

if the missus can drive she could pick you up at the other end so you do a quite a good run along the ridges

If the weather (or your legs) are not 100% then rather than going all the way over Gatesgarth turn right near the top of the pass into Mosedale, past Mosedale Cottage, steep drop down into Swindale and follow the valley to Swindale Head. Pick up the Old Corpse Road over to Haweswater, turn left on road back to Mardale Head (about a mile of road running here I'm afraid) and back over Gatesgarth to Sadgill.

Great winter route if conditions on the high fells are crap. Enjoy your visit.

You can run right round Haweswater nowadays, all on paths/tracks except for about a mile of road near the dam. The path on the road side of the lake is a little narrow and faint in places but it is there and access is allowed. This makes a nice low level alternative if the weather is bad and you could get across to it via the corpse raod.

Instead of going up the track to Gatesgarth go through the gate to the right of the bridge at Sadgill and up on to Great Howe. You can then go on to Grey Crag, Tarn Crag and Branstree before following the fence down to the top of Gatesgarth and off up to Harter etc. If you want a bit extra, drop down to the head of Haweswater from Branstree and take the ridge over Rough Crag and Long Stile up onto High Street, over Mardale I/B then drop down to Nan Bield and up onto Harter etc. back to Sadgill. Did that route on Sunday with lots of snow still about and is a great run with a bit of everything.
Do a lot of my training from Longsleddale so to many routes to describe on here. Maybe give me a pm nearer the time and we could go for a run or two, depending how fast you want to go !!!

Was that your Mudclaw tracks coming up from Nan Bield? I was out walking with a mate and me describing that they were running shoes started a right argument with him saying it was irresponsible to be out there in those conditions with no ankle support

Be warned Bad Manners is a top athlete
Though I may not be in his league I have the satisfaction that he's a ugly wee bugger who has to train on the fells around Longsleddale so not to scare the walkers with young children on the more popular fells

Certainly was. Wasn't ankle support that was needed, it was shin pads. A nightmare breaking through that top icey crust into the soft stuff !!!!
