    For a Fatherless Son

You will be aware of an absence, presently,
Growing beside you, like a tree,
A death tree, color gone, an Australian gum tree ---
    Balding, gelded by lightning--an illusion,
And a sky like a pig's backside, an utter lack of attention.
But right now you are dumb.
    And I love your stupidity,
The blind mirror of it. I look in
And find no face but my own, and you think that's funny.
    It is good for me
To have you grab my nose, a ladder rung.
One day you may touch what's wrong ---
The small skulls, the smashed blue hills, the godawful hush.
Till then your smiles are found money.

ah " you smiles are found money" devine

Consider your selves all duly reprimanded

Brilliant Mossy!...i don't mind being reprimanded at all!....Mmmm should i be admitting that ?

Ages ago I read Vikrem Seth's " A suitable boy", it is sucha romantic book littered with poetry which he intervweaves in the story, in fact i think if i remember right one of the charcaters sends poetry to his love but i might have that wrong as i literally haven't read it for years...but anyway here is one of his more sombre little poems....

Somewhere within your loving look I sense,
Without the least intention to deceive,
    Without suspicion, without evidence,
Somewhere within your heart the heart to leave.

Vikram Seth is ace! I need to re-read A Suitable Boy. I've got a couple of trips coming up and will have to take it with me on one

aye its good, its a huge book but i found it educational and it also really made me want to go to india...one day hopefully!

changing the subject slightly...i am really into thomas hardy poems at the minute...here's one i like....

    Between us

Between us now and here -
    Two thrown together
Who are not wont to wear
    Life's flushest feather -
Who see the scenes slide past,
    The daytimes dimming fast,
Let there be truth at last,
    Even if despair.

    So thoroughly and long
    Have you now known me,
So real in faith and strong
    Have I now shown me,
    That nothing needs disguise
    Further in any wise,
    Or asks or justifies
    A guarded tongue.

    Face unto face, then, say,
    Eyes mine own meeting,
    Is your heart far away,
    Or with mine beating?
When false things are brought low,
And swift things have grown slow,
    Feigning like froth shall go,
    Faith be for aye.

South Africa in three weeks time, then Shanghai for a fortnight in April. Poetry will hopefully result. Maybe even some that rhymes!

Thomas Hardy has just been added to my list of poets to read more of. That's lovely.

I hope you get chance to see some sights again in between the work. There are some delightful places in SA.
