Thread: Today's poet

    Brief Partings
    Wang Yen Hung

A clutch at his war coat, and our tear stained cheeks touch:
The sails must needs be set for the urgent evening breeze.
Who says “For a brief parting grieve not?”
This poor life of mine, how many brief partings can it endure?

Most likely is the English manufactured word "canoodle" for a foolish lover first used in 1859,
The compact OED states that the origin is unknown.
I guess it would be possible to come over all swedish after you had had a good German Knuddeln! ha ha

    Somewhere beyond a mountain lies
A lake the color of your eyes--
And I am mirrored like a flight
    Of swallows in that evening-light.

    Lovers eternal, side by side,
    Closed in the elemental tide,
Nurture the root of every land--
So is my hand within your hand.

    Somewhere beyond an island ships
Bear on their sails, as on your lips
You bear and tend it from the sun,
    The blossom of oblivion.

    Eternal lovers, in whom death
And reaching rains have mingled breath,
Are drawn by the same draught apart--
So is my heart upon your heart.

    Somewhere beyond a desert rolls
An ocean that is both our souls--
Where we shall come, whatever be,
I unto you, you unto me.
Wow...that is truly lovely, thanks Mossdog.

Hi Freckle...it was a blast! Snow, sleet, endless bog and icy rivers. I had a good run and was only 30 seconds behind a woman who normally beats me by a long way. I think the training is paying off but I did fall asleep in the bath later! I also got two bottles of vino for my efforts...that's the great thing about the NYMAC races organised by Dave Parry, he believes in giving away as many prizes as possible and they are always wine, beer, whisky or chocs! Fantastic. Long live Dave Parry!

    Re: Today's poet

Today I had the good fortune of receiving Carol Ann Duffy's Rapture poetry book as a Valentine present

    Ship

    In the end,
    it was nothing more
than the toy boat of a boy
    on the local park's lake,
    where I walked with you

    But I knelt down
    to watch it arrive,
    its white sail shy
    with amber light,
    the late sun
    bronzing the wave
    that lifted it up,

    my ship coming in
    with its cargo of joy

Nice one DT! I must get myself a copy. I am currently devouring some gems in 'The Bloodaxe Book of Contemporary Indian Poets'. It has Kamala Das, Vikram Seth and Ravi Shankar amongst a host of other brilliant poets.
