Don't worry Herakles, you'll be fine. If the club is anything like mine or the fell runners I have met at races, they'll be really kind and welcoming. Have fun.

It looks like I just need to replace the battery - has only taken 2 years for me to look at it. Shocking behaviour for a building surveyor! Will get one tomorrow

    You are not the answer
    to my questions,
    you are not the saviour
    to bring me deliverance,
    you are not the prophet
    to tell me the meaning
    of my dreams,
    you are not a wise-man
    to tell me
    things aren't what they seem.

You are not all the king's horses,
    and all the kings men,
and even if you were, like them
you couldn't put me together again.

You are not a knight in shining armour,
to rescue me from the tower.
You are not going to slay the dragon
or arrive in my final hour.
    You are no magician,
to cut me in half then
    Make me whole.
I may not fit together too well
but mending me is not your role.

I am no beauty, you are not the beast,
this isn't something that a kiss could relieve.
    You are not a gypsy
whose palm I will cross with gold,
    I haven't come to you
    to have my fortune told.
You are not my guardian angel,
    you are definately not divine,
I am not asking for a sign.

You are not all the king's horses,
    and all the king's men
and even if you were like them
    it happened to fast;
you cannot undo what's already past
all I ask if for you
    to bear with me.

    You are not an astrologer,
to predict my future from the stars
you are not my sun and moon,
    to dictate my hours.
    You are not my boatman,
to row me to the shore.
    You are not my keeper,
to hold me safe behind closed doors.

You are not all the king's horses
    and all the king's men.
You cannot save me from my fate,
    and even if you could
like them you arrived too late.
You cannot undo what's already past
all I ask if for you
    to bear with me.

You are none of those things
    neither should you be.
I don't want to crush you
    with the burden of me.
I don't want to shatter you
    or drive you away;
make a monster out of either one of us,
or dig love an early grave.
I',m not asking to be saved
    just cherished.
    Not revered,
    but also not diminished.

    You are a beautiful man
    but just a man.
I want each of us to find
    our own identities,
    name our needs,
    plant the seeds of living.
I only ask that you stay with me
    while I fight my fight,
and I will do the same for you.
But I am no saviour, deliverer or healer
no wise woman, nor gypsy, nor angel either.
    But humour me
    Because I am a dreamer.

    Let all the king's horses
    and all the king's men,
go rescue some other victim who's fallen from his wall.
    If they couldn't be there
    to break his fall
    they won't break mine.

    We only have ourselves.
    We only get one chance;
    the rescuer, the rescued
    caught in their eternal dance
    don't help anymore
    especially not themselves
that's the myth I'm trying to fell.
    So lets begin the future...
    rescue ourselves

phew!!!!! i typed all that yer know! but she is good ain't she?
Wow Freckle, that brought a lump to my throat. Thanks for going to the trouble of typing it out. It sums up my feelings exactly and I am not even in a relationship.

Oooooo i know that feeling mate but the thing is at least you are turning up and the only way to improve is by training with those who are better than ourselves (well thats what i tell myself anyway) i still get a bit nervous but always feel pleased to have gone by the end

I went to a fire lecture recently and the instructor said every xmas he gave his fire alarms a new battery as a present, i thought that was a good way to remember to do it and as he pointed out at that time of year people often take them out to put in toys

    Fairytales
    Charlotte Ansell

    monday she was someone
    i wanted
    to get to know.
    i didn't understand
    why i should
find it hard to hug goodbye
    or kiss hello.

    tuesday she rescued me
    from the forest
    of my pride.
    a hundred years of branches
had grown up on all sides
    i wasn't sleeping
    more fatigued with pain;
    something inside had been denied
    until she came.

    wednesday she said she couldn't
    keep it secret
    anymore.
    she came and declared herself
    leaving flowers at my door.
she said i was her cinderella
that my foot fit her shoe
    but her words
    left me speechless
i hadn't expected my prince charming
    to be
    a woman.

    thursday she told me stories,
how love takes time to grow,
how frogs can turn into princes,
how the beast can be loved and known.
    how expectations and assumptions
    often leave a sour taste
    and the mirror reflects
    only the truth it sees
but only those who dare to
    can see it and believe.

    friday she took her pipe
and told me she would go,
    she had kept her promise;
charmed the rats out of my conscience.
    for her gift of healing
i needed to offer in return
    but i couldn't love her
    like she asked.
so she stole into the night
    and i could neither fight
    nor follow
    even knowing she was right.

the fairytales i used to read
always said the princess meets a prince
but now she's gone and i've not found
    happy-ever-after since
    it's become clear
    since she was here
    second best isn't
    going to be good enough
    anymore.

I have it! I totally love it and have posted a couple snow haikus from it on this thread. Do get a copy if you get a chance.

A fireman coming round to my house would be rather nice so long as it was a social visit!
