A good trick is to keep as much as you can outside the pack. So, I'll be fitting my tent and sleeping mat (a roll of radiator insulation foil - dead light and warm!) in the mesh on the sides. On that pack there's also a big mesh pocket on the front that'll hold a bit of kit. I suppose the other key thing is to take as little as possible!

    I use the OMM folding mat that doubles as your back system in the sack. I like this I've always got it with me in the hills if I get stuck out.

    Thats over 180g Ian

    a roll of radiator insulation foil
    Thats more like it

    I think the real trick to getting a light pack for MM is deciding do you want to suffer during the day or night.

    Day = Heavy pack
    Night = Light pack

    I don't notice it as it's always in there and you take the other mat out so the increase is nearer 100g

    Like the second bit. very true

    Cheers Ian, I'll take a look at the mat in the OMM sack. I hadn't realised they came as standard. The radiator foil is pretty good though! 4m folded over to make a 2m mat. Definitely does the job warmth wise and is incredibly light. Not as comfortable as a Thermarest, but not too bad.

    Completely agree Baggins! I did my first 3 MMs last year... heavy pack and nice night on the Saunders and Rab, but stripped right down for the OMM. I've had a better night's kip, but well worth it. Investing in lighter kit also helps, but it's not cheap. My partner on the OMM doesn't like to carry his wet socks from day 1 with him on day 2 because of the additional weight, so he heats them up in a pan on the stove (after breakfast!) and sticks them back on. In the spirit of commerarderie I did the same. It's a winner!

    You ought to go on Winter trips with your MM kit, wet socks at the OMM felt like luxury, no need for warming in a pan

    I have the OMM 25, cracking scak for MM i must say, right down to the lightweight frame. I will be investing in some ultra light kit for this RAB. amazing how heavy stuff becomes thoughout the day!!

    Depends where the event is. If there's a good chance of water on the way round, I'd only start with a minimal amount (250ml or so).
