    Re: Achilles

an earlier posting mentioned recurrent achilles/calf problems as we get older: sounds just like me! My physio has pointed me in the direction of a podiatrist for orthotics as she reckons the problem is excessive pronation; the money spent on the orthotics should save money at the physio, and hopefully I'll be running more often.

Set mine off again doing triple jump of all things...thing is it felt fine last night so I went out for a long run with the club. Two thirds of the way in it satrted hurting but by this point there was no shortcut back! Now i've got a lump as well - what does that mean?!

I'm off to get some Voltarol gel as well!

That'll be a nodule. You really need to see a good physio.

I hope you get this sorted.

    Re: Achilles

I had Achilles Tendonitis with classic symptoms of soreness / stiffness when getting out of bed plus lump / bump above heel. This was aggravated this spring with road running training for FLM. After six weeks or so of eccentric excercises i.e. largely standing on one leg and pronating then supining foot it and repaeting with other leg it is now 70% better and continuing to improve. I strongly susepct that creams etc are only masking the pain and the problem will go not away. Excercises came from web but cannot remember page. It was titled something like "beating the pain of swollen achilles". web article stated that tendonitis is classic problem for over 40s I'm 43.

    Thumbs up Re: Achilles

I was off for 10 months last year with this. When eventually I went for treatment Physio. said it would not take long; it was just scar tissue & it would respond to massage & ultra sound. Oh no it didn't. I ended up with him giving me 4 sessions of acupuncture which stopped pain & the swelling gradually died down.
OK now, but a lot of catching up to do even though I did a lot of cycling instead of running.

    Regards,

    Max.

    Re: Achilles

What I thought was an achilles problem my physio told me yesterday was actually a tear in the calf. I'm back running after 6 weeks, very slowly and not uphill (not an issue in London), but earlier than I thought I would be. What has really helped is a wobble board. Not to be advised when drunk though.

    Stiff achilles

Anyone any tips for this? Been a little stiff/tight for 12 days now although I have run & raced on it without trouble, just seems when I am walking around it feels tight and possibly getting slowly worse...........

Eccentric strengthening might help, but I'm no physio. Have a look at achillestendon.com Some recommend acupuncture, which can be useful in the early stages apparently.

I hope you get it sorted - I've had achilles trouble for over a year now. I tried stopping running for 3 months last winter, however it didn't do it any good and at times it is still as painful as ever, but I've decided that it's something I'm just going to have to put up with.

    Re: Stiff achilles

Sounds like mild tendinosis. Am just concerned that it will get worse and worse. I am currently massaging and then rubbing in tiger balm as well as stretches. I remember having it years ago and it just seemed to go away after I backed off training a little. If it does start getting worse I guess I will see a physio - if it's not one thing it's a bloody nother!!
