I was going to take my BMC/Harveys mountain map, plus one of the old green 1:25K maps to cover the bit that's missing (Gragareth)
They were fine with my BMC map with the extra strip of Gregareth gridsquares scanned from the relevant Harvey's Map and laminated over the tourist info box. If it weren't for the different colour palette used for altitude, you wouldn't notice.

But then I've been forging lift passes for 20 yrs so a race map's no problem

Slight word of caution. 315s etc wil be fine, but trying to get through kit check with a pair of more 'roady' trail shoes may lead to tense discussions with the 'checkers' who have (as has been mentioned) been known to check soles for grippyness.

Slightly worrying me all this talk of cushioned trail shoes and checking for grip.

I only have X-talons and was planning on using them, albeit an old pair with studs about half worn off. Any one else using them or used them in the past for Fellsman.

On another note it says for the kit check you need long trousers, breeches or leggings as well as waterproof trousers. Does that mean I can't just take my OMM kamleika bottoms, will I also need tights and if I did would 3/4 ones do. Never worn tights in my life but if thems the rules I'll have to get some

    I thought everyone took two sets of kit ;

The first one for the kit check and-

The second one the stuff you actually use

Ah, but what about the random kit checks they do at various places. I wouldn't want to be without my tweed breeches and 3lbs of emergency chocolate then..

you might get away with the shoes but you do need long pants and waterproofs.

I wore my shorts until the night section then put on the long legs as required but rolled them up to me knees until it got cold.

Interesting... trail shoes it is then!

Another question for those that have done this before... are there any sections that are particularly worth reccying? I can probably get up there for one day before the event, so I'd like to make the most of it.

    Re: Fellsman 2010

All this discussion and debate on 'kit checks' is good but I feel that it does highlight an issue with some events and kit checks. Having discussed with a few guys on the OMM the size and weight of their packs etc, it is known that the 'random' kit checks are vary scarce, if in fact they exist at all, therefore no wonder people do not carry the correct equipment and can compete with daysacs weighing 5lb or something daft. The personal choice of do not skimp in case you get caught out in bad weather does not seem to always apply. The other side of the coin though is now for an event such as this where discussions and concerns appear about 'half worn' studded soles and trail shoes etc shows that there is a vast variation / interpretation as to what is acceptable and what is not in my opinion. The mention of 'Thermal' tights I would take as being that any running tights presented at the kit check must have the title of 'Thermal' mentioned on the garment label - not just running tights / leggings - but would they accept the latter garments?

On the shoe side it does say 'First class condition' & 'manufactured for fell walking / running or an acceptable studded sole' - I would read this as any trail shoe / walking boot or fell shoe in that case - but as for 'first class condition' - I have only ever seen shoes like this once - when they have been taken out of the box! So the non-acceptable 'misshapen or worn' is quite debateable.

Quite an interesting topic this - there is no wonder it is contentious as when people have travelled many miles and paid entrance fees / accommodation etc I would be annoyed to be rejected for failing a 'kit check'. I can see a complete set of spare kit being taken for the just in case ...

Is the kit check at the end - Threshfield in the morning before you catch the bus to the start or at the start?
If its at the start and you've just taken all you need on the bus then you get rejected, how would you get back to the finish to get your emergency 'if i get rejected kit'?
Or can you take more stuff to the start and leave it there if not needed?

    Re: Fellsman 2010

From memory, in the information pack sent out, I think it says that a kit check is available in the evening at Threshfields (to cut down waiting time in the morning) plus there will still be a kit check on the morning of the event at Ingleton with random checks throughout the route.

I am camping for a few days before hand so am getting 'the boss' to drop me off at the start so my 'reserve' kit will be in the car. Saying that if I am not busy I will try to get it completed the night before.

This is from memory though as I have not got the pack in work with me.
