having just done the 32mile Haworth Hobble on Sat, comparing the previous results of the two races how come Calderdale at 36m takes Sooooo much longer. Is it just hillier, or muddier / boggier?? It seems like Calderdale is a coupla hours 'longer' than HH !

I've entered the long route, but will just be taking things nice and steady. Have walked it many times, but never entered the runners start, so must be sensible.

You are right- it does take longer
Not only some extra miles but also 6000 ft of climb so I guess that and the descents on screaming quads are part of the answer.
I also made a couple of minor navigation errors last year and I guess it all adds up

Comparing the two events I'd say I've found the Calderdale quite a bit harder. It has at least 1000ft more climbing and I also think 36 miles is a conservative estimate of the distance, we didn't make any mistakes last year and did over 37.
The navs also harder and less obvious, and there tends to be less people to follow.
I love both events, but they are quite different.

My thinking exactly. There's very little if any off piste on the Hobble

cheers. I dont mind climbing and descending, so, its all about the nav then! anyone got any maps etc and hints on tricky nav sections to watch out for?

I'll be back to have a crack at this one with Clairster. Last done in 2008, sure I can do better with more astute planning and navigation. Has the route changed/reversed since then? I'm not sure of the pattern (if there is one - I believe 2009 went other way around?). 2008 was an anti-clockwise year. I've had a quick look at CPs on site but can't relate them to memories of that day and don't have map to hand

I think last year's route may have been a new one. Certainly it had very little in common with the 2007 event. Might be worth a recce.

The route changes completely every two years, no clockwise/anticlockwise about it. This year is the same as last. A reconnoitre is definitely worthwhile.
