    Re: Today's poet

    Ceres, most bounteous lady, thy rich leas
    Of wheat, rye, barley, fetches, oats, and pease;
    Thy turfy mountains, where live nibbling sheep,
    And flat meads thatched with stover, them to keep;
    Thy banks with pioned and twilled brims,
    Which spongy April at thy hest betrims
    To make cold nymphs chaste crowns; and thy broom groves,
    Whose shadow the dismissed bachelor loves,
    Being lasslorn; thy pole-clipt vineyard;
    And thy sea-marge, sterile and rocky-hard,
    Where thou thyself dost air--the queen o' th' sky,
    Whose wat-ry arch and messenger am I,
    Bids thee leave these, and with her sovereign grace,
    Here on this grass-plot, in this very place,
    To come and sport: her peacocks fly amain.
    Approach, rich Ceres, her to entertain.

    ~William Shakespeare, The Tempest (Iris at IV, i)~

    I like the idea of Shakespeare writing the line about where the nibbling sheep live.

    I need inspiration for tomorrows race so I turned back the clock a bit to this corker of a poem by Mossy....reads even better second time around!....

    i particularly like the metronome line and will carry that one in my head tomorrow I think!

    Bowderdale farmsteads,

    stare sullen, as a neighbour's scorn.
    Baleful hounds raise alarm -
    an interloper,
    uninvited, synthetic,
    antithesis to this world of flax, wool,
    the earth and solitary secrets.

    Laces tightened, straps pulled, watch glanced,
    The Ritual begins.
    Final check, and head for West Fell,
    dirty snow prised of it's grip,
    a gravel spewed trench,
    an Eton mess of peat, soil, sheep piss.

    Trudge forward,
    seeking the metronome of pace-pulse,
    an inner equilibrium of effort.
    Predictably, doubts descend,
    as winter midges,
    sirens of despondency;
    but I know better,
    cultivated refusal to relent,
    fuelled, at first, by petite conceits,

    The squelch of sodden fell,
    steeper ground,
    the taunting begins,
    the first skirmish with pain.
    Yet, entranced by strands of yellowed grass,
    a twist of peat,
    a subtle shift!
    That loosening of identity,
    no longer runner,
    an impress on the air,
    an exhalation of warm, moist breath,
    a studded imprint,
    allowing the Moment to pull forward.

    The Calf, unsuckled, rears,
    mist shrouded, then passes;
    and the Moment surges onwards,
    shedding identity,
    a fragmented wake,
    black as minums,
    singing the efflorescence of spirit
    a quiet unity, achieved at last!

    off for some z's......

    the waking
    theodore roethke

    I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
    I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
    I learn by going where I have to go.

    We think by feeling. What is there to know?
    I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
    I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

    Of those so close behind me, which are you?
    God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
    And learn by going where I have to go.

    Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
    The lonely worm climbs up a winding stair;
    I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

    Great Nature has another thing to do
    To you and me; so take the lively air;
    And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

    This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
    What falls away is always. And is near.
    I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
    I learn by going where I have to go.

    a poem about 2 chaps I encountered (AGAIN AND AGAIN) on the Allendale Challenge today.

    Pete Bogs – we’ve met before.
    2 years ago to be precise.
    You didn’t impress me then
    And you dont now.
    With your gaping maw,
    Bottomles gut
    And appetite for runners.
    Get out of the way
    Sapper of strength and spirit
    But first give me back my mudclaw
    Motherf*****.

    Pete Hags. As ugly a your name suggests.
    A glutinous roller-coaster
    ‘Undulating’ would make you sound benign
    And you’re not.
    Also known as Pete Groughs
    Another ugly name.
    Well deserved

    Calypso.

    You had been crying,
    He'd left you,
    Laying in bed your eyes puffy,
    Too much wine had passed your lips,
    Come and lay next to me,
    Stay the night,
    Just be with me,
    I couldn't i didn't want to spoil our friendship,
    Calming you saying you'd be ok,
    I left,
    In truth i hadn't the courage,
    To lie next to you feel the warmth,
    Of your soft sensuous skin next to me,
    I can't think of anything i want more,
    The regret will stay with me all my life,
    As i love you as much today as i did then,
    Wanting more than ever for the chance to arise,
    So i don't make the same mistake again,
    And miss being so close to you.

    This is great OW! Gets me all inspired for tomorrow and Gisborough Moors...although I think the clartiness may be lacking after today's fine weather. Hope you enjoyed your run.
