    Re: Lyme's Disease

    Sorry to hear that Starsky.

I've been to the Docs about this tick and part of it still being in my leg, to be told that there's nothing he can do I must got to A&E.
Off I go to A&E to be told that the Doc should have just given me some Antibiotics, get them from A&E, so a couple of hours wasted.

The nurse in A&E told me I should cover the tick with Vaseline and not to pull in out with the proper tick removing things

I told him on the tick websites it says not to put vaseline on them, he insisted that was the correct thing to do!

If I went to the docs every time I had a tick bite I'd never be away from the place!
Just remove the blighters and report to the doc if you develop any symptoms is my philosophy.

I would have, but part of the tick was still in my leg!

The vet sprays them with an alcohol solution before using the tick thing, got sick of taking the dog and paying a fortune so now I do it! Nasty horrible little things.

    Red face Ticks help!

Yikes I have a highland tick on my arm near the crease of my elbow. It's still quite small and the skin around it is a bit pink.

I'm afraid of breaking it off - what's the best way of getting rid of the revolting little critter?

We get loads later in the year orienteering through bracken.
There's lots on the web- we tend to use tweezers or sharp finger nails- grab as close to skin as you can twist slightly and pull
The danger seems to be breaking off the 'spike'
if we think tyhat happened (and I don't think it has yet) the we keep an eye on it. If it is very red still 24 hrs later I would get it checked. Many GPs etc are not that clued up on Lymes disease ( I guess they don't meet it often) so you may need to explain etc

Thanks Karen. I've pulled it off and have checked with a magnifying glass. I can't see any sign of bits left so I think I got it all.

You can get a tick remover from the vets although I'm sure the chemist may have one Dave (the dog) gets flippin loads, the vet put some surgical spirit on it before extracting it but when I do it I don't bother with that, you just need to make sure you get ALL of it out and as Karen says don't leave the head in. If you put the hook under it wait a sec then twist gently don't just yank it out!!
