    Re: Welsh 1000 metres

Several years ago half a dozen of us clambered onto the back of the train only for the driver to stop the train and make us get off. Another year whilst trying to do a directissimo by dropping off directly to the campsite at Nant Peris we got crag fast and ended up in all kinds of lumber !.......fond memories

I find that jogging /walking down from the summit a good leg streacher and helps with recovery. It`s best to just finish the race and not hang around and just make your way down on foot, its what most runners do.You should be down in Llanberis in under an hour(easily)and even faster if your going to Pen y pass.

I'm thinking of doing the full race this year for the first time, having only previously done the half version. I went for a reccie of the Carneddau section a few weeks ago and was unsure which was the best route to take from the top of the Aber Falls. Should I cross the river straight after arriving at the top of the falls and work my way up towards the Berras or is it better to follow the river for a while and cross further up?

Not too far up, I normally cross near the sheep fold, then straight up the bank and through the Bera's. That's about the hardest section.

This is the thread from last year - some route advice here too. http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showt...tre-Peaks-race
Recce'd the half-race yesterday in fine vis (apart from Yr Wyddfa summit obviously, usual views there I'm afraid...) Quite agree with the comment above - my mates who are doing the full race as 'Mountaineers' just can't help themselves taking the p1ss out of me for doing the half-race. So they refer to it variously as the "namby-pamby version", "girls' race", etc, etc

A question to you experts regarding the best line down from the llyn to Pen-y-Pass: -

There is a fence running down from the south end of the lake to the Youth Hostel; we took the right hand side of this but then ended up climbing back over the fence to reach the east end of the hostel, and the descent was a bit dodgy navigating through small crags.

Is it best to descend with the fence on your right the whole way ?

Other than that, route-finding was pretty easy

I'm going to have a crack too. First time. I've done the 3000s, but this is a wildly different route I expect.

The advise here is all great - cheers to those who have contributed.

cross the river using the fence and then keep it on your right. You drift quite far left away from it across a juicy bit of ground towards a knoll in the distance. It looks too far left but it's not. Once around this lump in drops a few metres into another juicy bit and then climbs up, I think there is a fence or post to guide you. From there it's a drop down to the back of the youth hostel on the capel curig side
