    Re: Calder Valley Round

Did a sunny CVR on Friday 23rd. Amazed and pleased to manage 3:04:45. Nice day for it, the slippy bits weren't slippy and the muddy bits weren't muddy. Also I know the route well and had run around the 2/3rds of the route with Strider a few weeks ago.
    Splits I recorded:
    Old Town 28mins
    Gibson Mill 51mins
    Stoodley Pike 2:17
    Finish 3:04:45 (do I call this 3:04, or 3:05?)

    Re: Calder Valley Round

Just been round this morning in 2h 34, starting from Slack Top (since this is 200m from my front door). It was a great morning for running, although the stone paths were just a bit greasy from overnight rain. I pushed it hard all the way round and only place where I lost time was the section across the moor to the top of Broadhead Valley. I turned right after what I thought was the 2nd boundary stone but it was way too soon.

    Splits from Slack Top:
Staups Mill 24.37; Stoodley 56.16; Track Junction 1.14.34. Park Cottages 1.25.10; White 1.33.29; Old Town 2.03.26; Gibson Mill 2.23.27; Slack Top 2.34.49

Will let Mountain Man decide if the time counts, or whether I need to do it again starting from the White Lion!

Utmost respect to Spookster for going round twice yesterday - look forward to supporting him on his BG in June.

Great stuff everybody, near perfect conditions at the moment I would think - dry underfoot and the undergrowth is not too dense yet.

I think it would be a bit mean not to recognize times that do not start at the White Lion so long as they include the out and back to the White Lion so everybody is covering exactly the same course. However, I will make a distinction for record holders so Simon B has the record for an en-route start of 2-34 and Compo has the record for the official White Lion start at 2-44. Congratulations Simon. Looks like 2-30 will now be the time to go for for the real elites

And double congrats Spookster - on the first double - looks like yet another record category!!

That's fair enough.... will have another trip round from The White Lion at some point soon to see if I can squeeze another 5 mins off the time...

Just back from a double. 3:27 first and 3:49 second, including soup stop! I reversed the second leg for the sake of variety and enjoyed it. Saw a wounded deer up from Gibson Mill. Just after a lot of barking further down the valley where I passed two hill billy looking characters with dogs. Saw a Heron at the pond below Staups and plenty of yellow flags on the way to Stoodley. Good day out with plenty of climbing!

Doubles are catching on!! Congratulations Rodders - must have a go at one myself sometime. Just noticed Spookster's double of 6-44 included a first round in 2-44 to equal Compo's January record!!

Aye, Spookster beat me to it by a week. I'm built for comfort, not for speed, I won't be seeing 2-44 unless I do it on a quad bike. I am meeting up with him on Sat to help him prep for his BGR. Thanks for putting together such a good route. Plenty of variety and the odd bit of climbing.

    Re: Calder Valley Round

I had a good run round this today in really nice conditions and managed to get round in 2:23. I'd reccied it a couple of weeks ago in a slowish time and with a couple of navigational issues, the main one being the same as for Simon B, where I turned right after two boundary stones on my way to get to the Broadhead Valley but ended up over at Bell House. It seems it should be more like "after a further four boundary stones".

No route problems today though. Split times were:

    Old Town Mill 25:39
    Gibson Mill 43:49
    Staups Mill 1:18:08
    Stoodley Pike 1:48:24
    Track Junction 2:05:15
    Park Cottages 2:16:28
    White Lion 2:23:22

Unlike Spookster and Rodders, I thought once round was enough for now! Thanks to Mountain Man for the route.

WOW! quite a time that Rombald - a new record by a long way, congratulations.

Perhaps I'd better count the boundary stones again next time I go round!!

    Re: Calder Valley Round

That's a great time Rombald, many congratulations. I'm guessing that will take some beating.

I went back a couple of weeks ago and checked out the route from Dicks Lane into Broadhead valley. If my memory serves me right, the secret is not to count the second boundary stone that is c. 20m to your right (the one that's slighly off-vertical). Continue on to the next boundary stone after that, then take a small path to the right just after this. When this path forks take the left option - this then leads directly to the marker posts at the head of the valley. Something like that anyway....
