Thanks HMHS. I could have probably spotted you going up Dale Head as I was descending towards Honister. Well done for finishing.

I now realise I need to train harder for next year...!

It was the first time i truly expereinced a 'bonk'; I ran fine to the summit of Scafell Pike but began to feel sick on the aschent of Great Gable, slowing me down dramatically for the stretch to Honister Pass. By the time I got there, I was within 25 mins of the cut-off and seriously considered retiring due to the way I felt... Thankfully, and in spite of the tank being completely empty, and probably due to the flpjack given to me by fellow Cambridge Harrier Pat Austin (who couldn't race due injury,) somewhere deep within me the fighting spirit pushed me very slowly up Dale Head and helped me hobble down the other side to the finish line.

If i looked anything like i felt when I crossed the finish line, i was probably sheet white and wobbly

I was very pleased to finish, even if somewhat slower than expected, and know that my nav was fine, just need to do more long in-terrain training runds for next year.

Well done to all finishers, a big thanks to the organisers and especially the marshals on those claggy & cold summits. Commiserations to those who retired or got cut off, including 2 of my fellow club runners - one of whom went a bit wrong and ended up on Kirk Fell !

    Back next year
Chris, that's a fantastic effort. Your first big Lakes race I believe? It's a very tough event mate and it seems you acquitted yourself well.

Quite possible, there was a group of about 8 runners in front of me, and the thing is I knew it was wrong but just followed like a sheep, DOH!! It just seemed like everyone was going that way and I doubted my judgement. I also got a bad line on Brandreth, fairly direct but slow going.

Thanks Ade. I did Rydal Round last year, but there's a big jump between all the AMs I've done and the Borrowdale ! :w00t:

Sorry not to see you there...?

What a pair of numpties we are

Anyway, tell him Trev said hello and hopefully next time we meet we'll be going the right way.
I gather Peter has managed to finish the race once before in all the times he's tried it, and I reckon by the laws of probability he is due to chance upon the correct route next time he tries it He certainly seems to enjoy it...

Good to hear from you, Trev, and I'll pass on your regards to Peter - sure he'll appreciate it.

    Better luck next time

Anyone know how many actually started the race (and therefore how many retirements/time-outs) ?

I'd like to know that too. Might make me feel a little better not making cut off.

    Re: Borrowdale 2010

There's about 470 names on the entry list, though I don't know how many actually started. At a guess, maybe 400 starters and 50 dnf, but hopefully someone will let us know. I thought I was roughly middle of the field off Bessyboot and ended 296 of 346, having lost 30 places or so after Gt Gable.

Actually, just done some detective work. Allan G was wearing race No 1, the biggest number I've seen on the photos is 470. So, assuming, it was a fresh pack of numbers issued in numerical order, that's at least 470 starters. Makes me feel a bit better.

I think the number of starters was between 360 and 370.

    387 started.

    346 finished.

    7 timed out at Honister.

1 Disqualified for refusing to be timed out at Honister.

33 retired, 2 of whom did not bother to report at the finish, resulting in 2 1/2 hours of worry, checking and phone-calls to discover their whereabouts.
