Great day for it. Out on the course, really enjoyed watching everyone come through. Some good looking route choices. Food at end from Wilf's van, and a good social. Caught sight of Joss Naylor doing his 49th Mountain Trial! Lucky it wasn't on tomorrow looking at the Lakes forecast.
Yahoo Bloody Well done Rhys FR(DPFR) on your first win on the mens long, 2 minutes up I think on second place. a fantastic effort.
I found my lack of hill work over the last few weeks distinctly showed really struggled up the mamouth climbs and why that last climb?
5.50 for me 90 minutes behind Rhys!!!

If you're talking about my decision to add on another valley and pass between point 1 and 2, it was just because I wanted to see the view and to have a look at the later checkpoints in good time...... (oops!)

6:30 for me, would probably have been a touch under 6 without the diversion. Really enjoyed my first go at the event, and will hopefully be back many more times.
I cerainly made a couple of nav errors! Well, poor route choices anyway. Went round Haweswater between 2 and 3, but went beyond the path up to Kidsty Pike and ended up hacking through loads of bracken only to rejoin that same path... must've lost 15 minutes there and expended some unecessary energy. Did any go up over High Street? I'm convinced that must've been quicker. The slog up Low Raise was painful. Stayed high from 3 to 4, meaning I had the pleasure of the traverse between Caudale Moor and Thornthwaite Crag twice. Saved a lot climb, but added plenty of distance... probably too much on reflection. Went to the top of Yoke before dropping down to 6, thinking the ground would be easier on the descent. It wasn't. And, yeah, the pull up from 6 on the way to 7 was cruel.
Suffered with a bad stictch for the first few hours. Was conscious of eating and drinking plenty, but it kind of backfired. Fell stronger as I went on though (and stopped troughing the Snickers), so not all bad. 6.37 for me. Like Paul, would like to think I might've cracked 6 hours if I'd had a cleaner run.
Passed Joss Naylor (that just sounds wrong!) after 1. He was happily whistling away to himself. A total inspiration just seeing him out there.

I went that way and quite a few seemed to be following lower down.
Looking at the splits, those that went that way do seem to have been quicker. I went to the east and lost time relatively.
Not as much time as I lost being headless at CP1 though - convinced that I was on the right stream when I wasn't.
And then lost more time taking a roundabout route to CP2 (initially decided to go via Gatesgarth Pass and contour under the crags, but changed my mind at the top of the pass and took the path up Little Harter Fell - should have just gone straight up the hill from CP1).
From CP5 to CP6, dropping into the valley and diagonally up to the far ridge seemed to gain back some time though.
5:38 and a further down the results than last year, but I really enjoyed it, as always! Well planned route I thought, with finely balanced options on several sections.
