    Re: Mountain Trial 2010

Looking on Route Gadget (a great tool for this kind of event) I was way off with some of my route choices... Start to 1 not great, then 2 to 3 and on to 4 were very poor. I must've saved a decent bit of climb on the way to 4 staying high, but between 2 and 4 I added loads of distance. I reckon my total for the race must be getting on for 30 miles. No wonder my legs still hurt. The most annoying thing about 2 to 3 is that I never even looked at Caspel Gate as an option... saw up to Nan Bield or Haweswater and agonised over them without consiedring anything else. Poor show.

I wuldn't worry too much about route choices - Nan Bield was hard work coming the other way on the way to 2! (Yes, I got that lost on the easy section from 1-2)

I think my total was about 24.5 miles and 8500', so can belive 30 given some longer routes. looking at the map again I wish I'd taken the direct option between 5 and 6, as the traverse under/through the crags below Stoney Cove Pike turned my thighs to jelly, and the people going over the top of the pike were slower still.

Estimate my day out to have been 21.6 miles with 7700 ft which isn't nearly as far as my time suggests - but that is the Mountain Trial! ;-)

Interesting... I went back up Stoney Cove Pike rather than taking the traverse to the col and overtook a couple of people who were just ahead of me at 5 that did take the traverse (one of whom had overtaken me on the way to 5). I was halfway back up to Thornthwaite by the time they got round. Having passed over the col on my way to 4 and seeing the crags and scree there I'd decided against picking my way through it coming back from 5.

Ok, here's a question for all you pro's out there... How long does it take you to recover from an event like the Trial??

I only did the short event but my legs haven't felt this sore after a race in a long time! Admittedly to date I've only really raced in the Peak and the lakes is a whole different ball game but I am suprised by how long it's taking me to recover! Getting up and down stairs is still an issue at the minute and I don't think I'll be able to contemplate running for a day or two yet!

That said I absolutely loved the event, have never done anything that involves any real nav work before so wanted to use this to get a bit of experience. Think I learnt a lot from it and it was fascinating talking to others afterwards re what routes they took and also analysing the hell out of all the info on Winsplits, Splitsbrowser sites etc. I was far too reliant on my compass and focused on getting straight from A to B and should have taken a bit more time to try and find some smarter routes.

Like I say, all good experience and I can't wait to have a crack at the full event next year... if my legs are working again by then that is!

Time taken for recovery depends on a lot of things. Last year after 9hours + on the Men's trial I was still crawling to the bog on tuesday morning! This year after a more seemly 6+ hours I did a steady 9 miles on Tuesday so I guess that the main determinant is how long you were out there. In navigational terms it isn't a bad rule to remember that the map is your friend and the compass is your enemy - the straight route is only fastest if you can run it.

My legs have been pretty sore the last few days, but then I'm far from a pro! It's only really in the last year that I've started doing longer stuff and have probably averaged a couple of runs a month that are in the 4-6 hour range. I've definitely noticed an improvement in recovery as I've done more. Sunday was tough though, with a lot of climb and descent and I'm sure that's what I'm feeling in my legs. At least if it hurts it must be doing some good! Going to run for an hour tonight and that'll hopefully get the last bits of tiredness out.

just looking at the report in news and star Click Here its a bit parochial.. I don't mind them going on about Joss but they only just managed to mention the winner. Seems to have been written by a mate of birkinshaws.
loved this comment " A combination of factors ensured he was pipped at the post " yeh right , I am sure most of us could say that as well. A combination of factors like.... other people ran faster:
