I quite like the idea of collecting tasty wild mushrooms, and we normally have a good supply in and around back forest (near the Roaches). However, I'm always reminded of the descriptions of the destroying angel and death cap mushrooms; that a quarter of one mushroom is enough to kill you.

That's your Fly Agaric, very common all over - probably because nobody picks them to eat! You can eat small amounts (not advised) and they are hallucinogenic, I seem to recall that the myth of Father Christmas started with Scandinavians consuming them somehow and believing they could fly etc. Sounds good to me, better than most Christmases .
Which leads me onto the true "Magic Mushrooms", there's an enourmous crop of them out on the hills just now, excellent year for them - if so inclined. My sister is now convinced that her horse has gone a bit loopy lately because of the Magic M's it's eating in it's field. I think she could do with a few .

Picked a wonderfull Cep last night, fresh grown and perfect. Sliced it thinly and into the frying pan (in butter) with a few thin slices of black pudding. Bloody lovely - autumn flavours at their best.

This few days warm should be perfect growth, get on out there for possible bumper harvest.

I just got back from Tuscany where my mate lives in the mountains, and Fly Agaric are all over the place. Their toxicity has been grossly exaggerated - it's just people's neurotic fear of strange mushrooms. You might might feel a bit nauseous, but if you eat a sensible amount, that's probably about it - in terms of negative effects anyway! Not a good idea to eat lots though. We tried preparing and eating some, but nothing really happened ...

Another Cep and black pud (and baked beans, and scrambled egg and toast ) for breakfast today.

Just brought home a couple of big field mushrooms in my sack - should do for tomorrow.

Will give the Fly Agarics a miss thanks ZHR, don't feel that adventursome at my age , they are beautifull to look at though and never cease to inspire.

Went for a 12mile run with a friend today and we found nice fresh meadow puffball. It survived the journey home and we sliced it into little 'steaks' and fried it with garlic. Lovely soft, melt in your mouth texture.

This really is a bumper year. Mushroom for breakfast and a fresh Cep with my roast pheasant tonight. There are Ceps and everything everywhere. Really is too good an opportunity to miss, especially as the previous 2 years have been pretty barren here in Wales. Get stuck in whilst you can.
