How kind. And yes, Socks, the air was blue...so was I. However, I've done a Calder Valley Round today in beautiful weather, so don't feel altogether cheated of a run. My legs are telling me that 4 hours on the go is enough, and the additional 7 hours might have been excessive. The worst thing is a feeling of unfinished business with the Vasque series. I might just have to do another set of races next year.....

Basil, was it the branch on the left of the stile before the underpass and field with sunflowers that impaled you? That one impaled me last year so I was looking out for it this year. I must remember to take my secateurs next year.
There are some impressive times recorded. Jodg, you won't want to leave now you've got a taste for speed on these ultras.
I struggled to a 1.5-hour slower finish than I managed last year. It didn't come as a surprise after noticing my heart rate 'ticking over' at 176bpm on the first stage. (2 weeks' international business travel with air travel most days does nothing for race fitness!) I would have been 2 hours slower had I not teamed up with Mike Blamires in the second half, who proved to be a brilliant running buddy. We spurred each other on to a strong finish and a 10:43 PB for him. Mike's success made my own race so worthwhile; by the time we finished we knew we'd had a blast.
That's the one! I didn't dare stop at the time. After 70k you have to keep plodding on!
Leg 7s one of my local runs.
I reckon I know the bit you're on about. A 3/4" thick stem from a wild rose, on your left, which I'm always aware of after catching my shoulder on it a couple of times. I keep thinking about chopping or tying it back.
Don't bother bringing the secs, it'll be gone.
Oh dear. I had to retire at Firbeck 35 miles in - first time I've done that for a couple of years, although I was close to it on the Long Tour of Bradwell. I just had nothing left and almost passed out at the checkpoint. I guess I must just have gone off too fast, although I'm going down with a cold now, so perhaps that's got something to do with it. I was eating & drinking OK - 110-120 kcals every 45 mins, which usually works OK. I won't be back next year to get even though - just too much urban, brown field and arable running for my liking. Well done to everyone who got round (however much slower than last year, Nick).
