Aw...i do indeed think that is poetical...in fact i think your little trots out embody all that is poetical about fell running...

    Not one for orthodoxy
He takes his beard and his hound
with a skip and a bound
    who needs a running club?
    why bother racing?
    especially when there's photies
    to be a taking...
    the quiet poet without words
    that's our stolly
    and all those who mock
let them be the subject of folly!

he he ! not exactly my best but yer get the picture!

Alf and Steve...good point about the "other " thread...my bet is that there will be a revival soon!

    Re: Today's poet

This one I thought of when I read 'The Choice' that Hes posted.

    Don't Say I Said

Next time you speak to you-know-who
I’ve got a message for him.
Tell him that I have lost a stone
Since the last time I saw him.
Tell him that I’ve got three new books
Coming out soon, but play it
    Cool, make it sound spontaneous.
Don’t say I said to say it.

He might ask if I’ve mentioned him.
Say I have once, in passing.
    Memorise everything he says
And, no, it won’t be grassing
When you repeat his words to me –
It’s the only way to play it.
Tell him I’m toned and tanned and fine.
Don’t say I said to say it.

    Say that serenity and grace
    Have taken root inside me.
    My top-note is frivolity
But beneath, dark passions guide me.
Tell him I’m radiant and replete
And add that every day it
Seems I am harder to resist.
Don’t say I said to say it.

Tell him that all my ancient faults
    Have been eradicated.
I do not carp or analyse
As I might have when we dated.
Say I’m not bossy any more
    Or, better still, convey it
Subtly, but get the point across.
Don’t say I said to say it.

Thanks for this Mossy. It really is inspiring. I'd rather stop and remember the good stuff than descend into unhappiness further and keep raking up what went wrong...it is just hard somedays to remember that it was the right thing to do!

Philip Larkin - Love, We Must Part Now

Love, we must part now: do not let it be
Calamitious and bitter. In the past
There has been too much moonlight and self-pity:
Let us have done with it: for now at last
Never has sun more boldly paced the sky,
Never were hearts more eager to be free,
To kick down worlds, lash forests; you and I
No longer hold them; we are husks, that see
The grain going forward to a different use.

There is regret. Always, there is regret.
But it is better that our lives unloose,
As two tall ships, wind-mastered, wet with light,
Break from an estuary with their courses set,
And waving part, and waving drop from sight.

That's a funny poem Alf, thanks! I bet there are a few people who have felt that way too.

I saw that post Stolly and thought very much the same thing as Alf except I was supposed to be working so didn't log in to reply! I love the idea of you flitting between crags all beardy and wizened.

    Re: Today's poet

Right, I'm feeling much cheerier today and want to help celebrate the 10000th post. Congratulations and many thanks to Freckle!!!!

    An Epilogue

I have seen flowers come in stony places
And kind things done by men with ugly faces
And the gold cup won by the worst horse at the races
    So, I trust too.

Orange is the colour ...........at least states side

    The Signature Mark of Autumn

The signature mark of autumn has arrived at last with the rains:
    orange of
pumpkin, orange persimmon, orange lichen on rocks and fallen
    logs; a copper
moon hung low over the orchard; moist, ruddy limbs of the
    madrone, russet
oak leaf, storm-peeled redwood, acorns emptied by squirrels and
    jays; and
mushrooms, orange boletes, Witch's Butter sprouting on rotted
    oak, the Deadly
Galeria, and of course, chanterelles, which we'll eat tonight with
    pasta, goat
    cheese, and wine.

    Re: Today's poet

Thanks for that SA and to continue today's Autumn theme

    Autumn

The leaves are falling, falling as if from far up,
as if orchards were dying high in space.
Each leaf falls as if it were motioning "no."

And tonight the heavy earth is falling
away from all other stars in the loneliness.

We're all falling. This hand here is falling.
And look at the other one. It's in them all.

And yet there is Someone, whose hands
infinitely calm, holding up all this falling.

Ten thousand flowers in spring, the moon in autumn,
a cool breeze in summer, snow in winter.
If your mind isn't clouded by unnecessary things,
this is the best season of your life.
