I missed that one too - too intent on making haste to the sprint finish. Ho yes.
I did see several office chairs and the obligatory supermarket trollies in the river on the first leg, though.

I was again transfixed by the festering green mat that keeps the stagnant stretch of canal warm, shortly before the finish.

You must be completely sold now, Fly.

Stagnant? if its the bit I'm thinking off, it might not be the prettiest, but the canals alive enough to be considered as an international fishing venue..... I used to paddle downstream, from Stocksbridge - Just upstream from the start/finish theres salmon, trout, otters and kingfishers

No, it's a dead end section as far as I recall, so no water flow.

Wonder if its one of the ‘overflow’ bits? There’s one higher up in Rotherham, which can be one of the hidden gems. I’ll have to extend one of my runs out that way, check it out. I know from my paddling days there were grants available to local groups for clearing up sections of waterways....
Surprised there’s a fridge there, there are that many ‘scrap men’ suddenly appeared round here you’d have thought it’d have gone as soon as it hit the water!

    BTW - nice blog

THe slimy green bit was just after the pub in Swinton and was bounded by a lock gate. No free-flowing water at all.

Looked as if you could walk on it it was so stagnant!

I remarked to Datt "oh look, a water lily..." only to see upon closer inspection it was the bottom of plastic soft drink bottle....

Aaah, spotted where you mean. It’s connected to the canal proper, but its right at the back of an old boat building/repair area and looks like there’s a series of gates. Wonder how long it is since those gates were opened? Looks very green on the pics.

I know it's a bit late (work commitments) but I've just posted my RRR report. I did enjoy it and I will be back next year for sure, to see what the old body can muster in 2011.
