Thread: Today's poet

    Re: Today's poet

Just listened to a really good "something understood " on i player which discussed the notion of a place of safety, is this to be found outside of ourselves or wthin ourselves?... as usual the odd poem was thrown in for reflective purposes, including this little gem...

    The Peace of Wild Things
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

    THE HARLOT'S HOUSE

We caught the tread of dancing feet,
We loitered down the moonlit street,
And stopped beneath the harlot's house.

Inside, above the din and fray,
We heard the loud musicians play
The "Treues Liebes Herz" of Strauss.

    Like strange mechanical grotesques,
    Making fantastic arabesques,
The shadows raced across the blind.

We watched the ghostly dancers spin
To sound of horn and violin,
Like black leaves wheeling in the wind.

    Like wire-pulled automatons,
    Slim silhouetted skeletons
Went sidling through the slow quadrille.

The took each other by the hand,
    And danced a stately saraband;
Their laughter echoed thin and shrill.

    Sometimes a clockwork puppet pressed
A phantom lover to her breast,
Sometimes they seemed to try to sing.

    Sometimes a horrible marionette
Came out, and smoked its cigarette
Upon the steps like a live thing.

Then, turning to my love, I said,
"The dead are dancing with the dead,
The dust is whirling with the dust."

    But she--she heard the violin,
And left my side, and entered in:
Love passed into the house of lust.

Then suddenly the tune went false,
The dancers wearied of the waltz,
The shadows ceased to wheel and whirl.

And down the long and silent street,
    The dawn, with silver-sandalled feet,
    Crept like a frightened girl.

On the question of lard, said the bard...

freckle was doing so well with her weight loss plan
only soup for tea, in addition she swam
    but then her cooker broke
at least she thought it did
    but wait...aha...
    she fixed it
    and was very pleased
    so much so
she partook of wine and cheese
    "Never mind", she pondered
    "about tonights deviation,
    there's always tomorrows
    recompense..."
    and whats the point
    in getting all tense?
    so tomorrow I'll look forward
    with the utmost glee
to cous cous and roasted veg
    and a cup of tea!

    Exhale

    Words will not form
    Within the immoveable ivory
    and drifting off
    to a fettered slumber
    I summase that one inchoate
    and infinitesimal kiss
    would quieten
    the chitter chatter .

and allow for an imagining ,
    thus
    its morning and awakening
    to the sounds of trees
    y-o-u,
    padding around downstairs
and the warmth of these limbs
    would remind me...

    Exhale.

Hi everyone , wide awake unfortunately , thanks to smoke alarm malfunction ( wired into the mains variety - deafening ! ) , only just got my children back off to sleep and am now trying to get sleepy again .
Just read " Exhale " ..... which completely had my attention at " Infinitesimal Kiss " , I really like that Freckle !

    I FIND MY HAPPINESS
    IN LOVING YOU

I find my happiness in loving you.
Though my love is not returned, I don’t mind waiting.
The woods are a cathedral where I pray
For the beauty and grace that lie within my heart.

You hold me and we kiss, and yet not yet
Is there the unity that love must crave.
    You want me, but not as I want you;
This truth is like a wreckage on my sea.

There’s no one else I hunger for, nor touch
    That makes me feel I must take off my skin;
And so I’ll wait as years pile up like leaves,
And long with the lonely patience of the moon.
